Game Objective: the 4 or 5 closes on the attacker while the 2 or 3 "switches" positions with him to
Topic: Interchange Positions in Recovery
Phase: Defense Phase 3
Problem: The attackers are threatening to get behind us and force us to leave open space near the goal.
Who: 4,5, 2. 3
Where: Defensive third
When: When the BC is threatening to drive behind our line or pass through the back line.
What: Protecting the goal by switching positions while maintaining moderate pressure on the ball.
Why: to recover the ball in the box and either clear it or begin our attack
Layout: 15 x 15 field divided in two; Can expand to 20 x 20 and add a fifth attacker
Restrictions: 4 v 3 ; 2:10:2; Target must play ball to weak side; intially no challenges on the drive;
Scoring: 1 point for correct interchange; 1 point for connect pass to target
Game: Play to target; Defenders rotate; only two of the three should be in play
Coaching Points: (1) Closest player to ball cuts off BC's forward progress
(2) Players within channel in front of BC, “Squeeze" from behind
(3)All other players, urgency to recover behind ball
(4) Re-organize lines in defensive shape: “Block”
