Rob Herringer, Coaches Bio: 

A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Herringer has been a United Soccer Coaches member since 2000. Herringer holds the United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, the Master Coach Diploma, a US Soccer “A” License and professional development certificates from federations and clubs in Scotland, England and The Netherlands. He is the 2023 recipient of the United Soccer Coaches Mike Berticelli Excellence in Coaching Education Award for his contributions as an educator and service to the game.

Herringer began his coaching experience as the head coach for boys and girls at Leavenworth (Kansas) High School. He also held positions as staff coach for Kansas Girls ODP, US Youth Soccer Region II Boys and head of the Kansas Boys ODP program. He has been Director of Coaching for the Leavenworth Soccer Association and Kansas Youth Soccer. In 2003, he was named the men’s coach at his alma mater Benedictine College, a position he held for 11 years before becoming the Executive Director of Elkhorn Soccer Club in Omaha, now the Elkhorn Athletic Association. In September of 2023, he was named Director of Coaching Education for United Soccer Coaches.

Session Organisation: 

  • 14 outfield players and 2 goalkeepers
  • Approximately 24/30 yard grid divided into three equal channels.
  • 1v1 in each of the 3 channels. with 4 floaters outside of the playing area.
  • 1 goalkeeper in each gate.
Instructions:
  • Players must remain in their assigned channels, but they may pass to any teammate, inside and outside of the grid.
  • Players on the outside of the grid are limited to two-touch.
  • The object is for teams to play the ball to the goalkeeper stationed in the opposite gate.
  • New balls start with goalkeepers.
  • Play two, 3 minute games. Rotate players between games.
Progressions:
  • The first attackers may dribble into another channel, but a teammate must take their place (always 1v1 in each channel). 
  • Remove channels and allow players to move freely.
Coaching Points (Out of possession):
  • Immediate chase and defending in transition
  • Quickly transitioning to attack and attempting to play forward first
  • Connecting the first pass immediately after winning the ball
  • Pressing on tactical cues such as opponent turning to face their own goal, on opponent's poor

Session Organisation:

  • Approximately 60x35 yard grid divided into two zones and penalty area.
  • Begin with 3v3 in Zone 1 and 3v2 in Zone 2.
  • Players on the outside serve as bumpers and may not defend.
  • 1 goalkeeper at each end of the pitch.
Instructions:
  • Ball begins with goalkeeper on the half way line.
  • White team must attempt to play through the thirds and score in the large goal.
  • Red team attempts to win the ball and pass to a 9 bumper player for a point.
  • All new balls start with the blue team's goalkeeper in Zone 1.
  • If the white team successfully score, the red team's score will go back to zero.

Progressions: 

  • The red number 6 may move freely between zones. Red team must now pass to a number 9 and receive the ball back and dribble across the line for a point.
  • Team in possession may send one player up a zone to support the attack.
 Coaching Points (Out of possession):
  • Forcing the opponent to the outside and away from the centre of the pitch.
  • Red number 6 dropping into backline if both wing backs get caught in transition OR when a centre back dribbles forward.
  • Tracking vertical runs from midfield and runs into the penalty area.
  • Limiting errors in defensive third.

Session Organisation:

  • Approximately 60x35 yard grid divided into two zones and penalty area.
  • Players on the outside serve as bumpers and may not defend.
  • 1 goalkeeper at each end of the pitch.
  • Red team in 3-3-2 shape; White team in 1-3-2-2 shape.

Instructions:

  • Ball begins with goalkeeper on the half way line.
  • Players on the outside serve as bumpers. These players may now defend each other (if adequate space is available).
  • Whites score by dribbling (under control) across midfield.
  • All new balls start with the red team. 

Progressions: 

  • If space allows, the team in possession may create a 2v1 on the flanks.
  •  Add an additional blue forward to create a 1-3-2-3 shape. Play 8v8.
  •  9v9 with wide bumpers to large goals.
Coaching Points (in possession):
  • Centre backs joining the midfield.
  • Combining central midfielders and forwards
  • The partnership between the number 9s.
