Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
45x40 yard field. Divided into two 20x 40 yard fields.
Goals: players to learn how to defend the overload. Players to defend together.
Welch Way Principles: Defending the overload
Recognize opposition movement, press quickly, protect the middle, leave the furthest player
Show away from goal, block central passes, stop switches of play, protect, the space between lines, control the space behind the last line.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
The red team will pass the ball out to the blue team. 2 blue players will attack and attempt to score on the goal. The single red defender will defend their goal. If they win the ball, they can score on the blue teams goal.
Each team will defend for 2 blocks of 5 minutes each.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Are the defenders getting out quickly?
Are the defenders slowing down and keeping the ball in front of them?
Are they shifting over as the ball is played?
Are they covering the middle?
Are they forcing the play wide?

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
The red team will pass the ball out to the blue players. The blue players will dribble across the field. As the blue players dribble, the red players will come out and defend them. They are not looking to take the ball yet. The players should be in proper defensive posture.
Get out quickly, slow down, turn side on, on toes, bend knees, arms up for balance, checking shoulder, eyes on ball, keep the ball in front of you.
The player furthest from the ball must provide support, balance and cover for their teammate.
Red and Blue team switch roles after 2 minutes.

3v3 plus 2 neutrals.
This allows a regular game flow with overloads. The team in possession will have two extra players with the neutrals. The focus is on making sure the defenders are working hard to protect their goal. Are they shifting and protecting the middle of the field?

The red player will pass the ball out to one of the blue players. The blue players will dribble across the field. They can also pass the ball to each other. As the ball is being passed, the red player must follow the ball and defend the player with the ball.
They must remember to:
Get out quickly, slow down, turn side on, on toes, bend knees, arms up for balance, checking shoulder, eyes on ball, keep the ball in front of you.
When the ball goes to the other player they must look to place themselves between the ball and the goal.
The red and blue team switch roles after 3 minutes.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Can the defenders get out quickly? Don't give the offense any free space.
Can the defenders keep themselves between the ball and the goal? Allow space outside, not in the middle.
