A practice working on dribbling and the use of skills when dribbling and taking on defenders 1v1. The small-sided game is conditioned to encourage players to dribble with the ball; with progressions and challenges designed to further motivate them to both dribble and take on players 1v1.

Topic: Dribbling
Set Up:-
(Transition Requirements:- Remove yellow and blue cones used in technical practice)
Large coned area measuring 25m x 25m
Area split into two smaller areas of 12m x 25m as shown in diagram
Equipment
Ideally each player should have a ball with extras as required to keep the game flowing.
Conditions
1. Players must try and dribble the ball to the opposite end-line which is defended.
2. A player from one team enters the pitch as a defender and must block the progress of the opposite team who enters the pitch as an attacker.
3. If the attacker is successful in breaking the end-line then that team gets a point. The next player on the attacking team then goes immediately and tries to break the line.
4. If the defender is successful in stopping the attack then their team becomes the attackers with the tackled player now becoming the defender.
5. Let play continue for 3 minutes and then swap groups
Coaching Points
1. Keep ball close
2. Evade defender using changes of direction and speed
3. If distances between lines are too great there may be a danger that the session includes too much running with the ball rather than the intended dribbling. If the coach notices this is the case then the cones should be moved to encourage more repetitions of dribbling.
Progressions
A successful attack using one of the skills from the technical practice is worth 2 points

Topic: Dribbling
Set Up:-
Large coned area measuring 25m x 25m
6 smaller target areas measuring 5m v 5m
4v4
Equipment
Coloured cones for marking out playing area and scoring zones
1 x ball in play plus extra as required to keep ball rolling
Coloured bibs (4 each of two colours)
Conditions
Two teams of four play. Team 1 attacks one end, Team 2 attacks the other. Players may run, dribble or pass to move the ball and maintain possession, but to score 1 point, players must dribble the ball into a scoring zone.
Coaching Points
1. Keep your head up when dribbling (look for teammate who may be in better position to score)
2. Keep the ball close
3. Use changes of direction/speed to beat defender
Progressions
1. If one team is finding the practice too easy, remove on of their scoring zones
2. Place a time limit on how quickly they must score. If they are unable then they lose possession.
3. Teams must try and score without making a forward pass. If they can score after a possession where no forward passes are made, this is worth 2 points. This should encourage increased dribbling.
Individual Challenges
1. Player should try and beat a player 1v1 using feints, stepovers etc before they are able to enter scoring zone
2. Player can only dribble using particular surface of foot
3. Player can only dribble using weaker foot

Topic: Dribbling
Set Up:-
Large coned area measuring 25m x 25m
Area split into two smaller areas of 12m x 25m as shown in diagram
Equipment
Coloured cones:- 14 Yellow; 8 Red
Ideally each player should have a ball but the practice can still be carried out successfully with one ball between two.
Coloured bibs (4 each of two colours)
Conditions
Players must dribble in-between first set of yellow cones using left or right foot but with surface of foot as dictated by coach
Players then dribble to blue cone and carry out a skill (V-Move, feint, step over etc) as dictated by coach before dribbling to opposite end line.
Opposite player then goes and the practice continues
Coaching Points
1. Keep the ball close by using small touches
2. Use different surfaces of foot
Progressions
Players should be challenged to dribble the ball and carry out skill using only right foot and then only left foot
