Activity 1: Build out Under Heavy Press (25 mins)

Activity 1: Building Out Against Heavy Press in a 4-3-3 Game

Organization:

  • Two grids with two blue teams in each playing in a 2-1 shape inside the grid.
  • Two yellow players (acting as fullbacks) stationed on the sides.
  • 5v4 build-up scenario:
    • Blues (build-up team) + Yellows (FBs) vs Reds (pressing team).
    • Blues aim to break the press and transfer the ball to the next grid by breaking the middle line.
    • If Reds win possession, they must dribble into the endzone for a point.

Key Coaching Points (KCPs):

  • Establish connection between CB-CDM-FB – develop familiarity and rhythm in playing out.
  • Build confidence – encourage calmness and precision under pressure.
  • Break the line – look to penetrate defensive lines with incisive passes.
  • Use 1-2 combinations to penetrate – quick interplay to bypass the press.
  • Provide options to play forward – movement off the ball to create passing lanes.
  • 3rd man play – utilize off-ball runners for progressive passing options.
  • Inverted runs from FBs – create central overloads and open passing lanes.

Activity 2: Finish the Attack from the Build-Out

Organization:

  • Field split into three zones:
    • Build-up Phase – 1-4-1 vs 1-2-1 (6v4 in favor of blue).
    • Middle Zone – 2v2, focusing on linking the build-up to the attack.
    • Finishing Phase – 3v6 (LW-ST-RW vs a 1-4-1 defensive setup).
  • Objective:
    • Blues build out by playing through the zones to find the AMs in the middle to progress into the final third.
    • If Reds win possession, they counterattack quickly in the opposite direction.

Key Coaching Points (KCPs):

  • Introduce movement of AM when FB makes an inverted run – open passing lanes.
  • Create numerical superiority – utilize the fullbacks' movement to break defensive lines.
  • Work on finishing in the attacking third – second priority after structured build-up.
  • Encourage attacking combinations – play between forwards to create quality goal-scoring opportunities.
