Station 4 Defending 1 v 1 (10 mins)

Defending 1 v 1  10/12 mins (activity 1)

Learning Objective:

Looking for players to understand how to defend in a 1 v 1 situation, where players might have to defend  (Area of the pitch).  When is a good time for a defender to try and win the ball? How is the defender's body shape

Organization: 15 x 20m  pug net, cones, Bibs, balls

Principle Players: Defenders, #2 #3 # 4# 5 #6

Procedure: Server (black) This can be a coach or a player, They serve into the attacker (red) as the ball is in motion the defender (blue cones/yellow pinnies) looks to close down and win the ball from the attacker. The attacker looks to score in the pug net. if the defender wins the ball they look to dribble or play the ball across the green defensive mid line or into a target player (if coach assigns) .

Restraints: Give field players a time limit 15/20 sec , set up a scoring zone so players have to score inside (worth more points)

Rewards: If the attackers can get into the scoring and score in less than 15 sec they get an extra point. If the defenders cant win the ball but deny a goal within 15 sec they get a point.

Coaching Details:  look to close down quickly, speed/angle of approach , eyes on the ball, (delay, deny, dictate )  balance and body , threaten the ball

  • Principles : Delay - The ability to prevent the ball from being played forward quickly. A pressuring player needs to reduce the time and space of the attacker to prevent the ball being played forward. This is especially important when outnumbered to allow the team to re-shape to a loss in possession appropriately.

  • Discipline/Patience - Defending players need to be patient and assess the risk involved in challenging for the ball. A well structured defending line can quickly become disorganized with one rash challenge. Players need to exercise control and restraint and re-adjust their shape to changing scenarios. Players also need to be alert to their surroundings at all times (scanning and communicating).

    2 v 2 (15 mins)

    Activity 2: 2v2

Learning Objective: Working to defend as a pair. The Closest player to the ball will look to pressure the attacker. The second Defender looks to provide cover. If the first defender gets beaten, then the covering defender now becomes pressure. The initial Defender looks to recover quickly and provide cover. (Pressure and cover to delay)

    Organization:

    Pitch - 18W x 20L

     8-12 PLAYERS

    Parameters: Zone 1 & 2

Restraint: narrow the pitch and give the attackers a time limit to create a goal scoring opportunity. Time limit can be 20 seconds

Reward: Defenders win the ball and pass or dribble through a gate they get 2 points

    Principle Players: Defenders, #2 #3 # 4# 5 #6

Tactics: not to allow the attackers to play through centrally, look to force them wide and away from the goal.

    Activity:

    - 2 TEAMS, (red team attackers, yellow team defender)

    - 2v2 INSIDE THE BOX THE GOAL IS TO BEAT THE DEFENDER AND SCORE ON THE SIDE OF THE NET

    - ONE OF THE DEFENDER WILL SERVE THE BALL TO THE ATTACKER, THEN GAME BEGIN.

    - IF DEFENDER WINS BALL HE CAN SCORE ON ONE OF THE PUG NETS

    : Progression: 3 attackers vs 2 defenders

    Coaching Points:

Defending in pairs:1st defender: (closet to the ball) Pressure, speed of Approach, Angle of Approach.

Deny space, Delay  Dictate where you want the opponent to go,

Cover Defender:  Squeeze inside to not allow the opponent to play through you (Split)

If the 1st defender gets beat, needs to step up to pressure the ball, delaying to allow the other defender to recover

    Defending Principles:

  • Delay - The ability to prevent the ball from being played forward quickly. A pressuring player needs to reduce the time and space of the attacker to prevent the ball being played forward. This is especially important when outnumbered to allow the team to re-shape to a loss in possession appropriately
  • Discipline/Patience - Defending players need to be patient and assess the risk involved in challenging for the ball. A well structured defending line can quickly become disorganized with one rash challenge. Players need to exercise control and restraint and re-adjust their shape to changing scenarios. Players also need to be alert to their surroundings at all times (switched on!).
