Ball Mastery/Tag Warm-Up

Set Up

- Balls in each corner

- Each corner has a 4x4 square

- Set up a ~20x15 grid (make it appropriate to your numbers)

- 2 taggers, the rest are being tagged

Game

Ball mastery warm up. It's a game of tag (players cannot enter the square in the corner unless they are tagged)

When a player gets tagged, they go to the nearest corner and perform the exercise (10x cruyff turn before going back in the game)

* Change the exercises throughout the season but ensure players are completing the moves correctly

Play 2:00 minute rounds and switch taggers (play 2-3 rounds)

Two Team Possession Game

How it works: Connect 5 passes before playing it across to opposite team for 1 point.  2 defenders can enter the grid to create a 5v2. *Adjust to make the numbers work*

When defenders win it, they try to connect a pass back to their team for an additional point.

Play 3:00 minute games.

Objective:

Create space by moving the ball to secure possession. Once we connect our 5 passes, we should be looking forward to play forward.

MENTALITY SETTING

- When you don't have the ball, we need to give everything we can to win the ball back. The better we are at defending, the best we will be as a team when we have the ball.

Questions:

- Are there differences in how we train vs how our opponents play us in games?

- Take your first touch into a space to prepare for the pass

- Connect passes away from pressure

- Play forward when we can

Coaching Points:

- Coach the first touch and body shape to receive the ball

- Help players on the ball see the passes that are available

Building ideas

Depending on numbers, you can set up 2 cross field games.

Coaching Points that can relate to games

- When the ball moves forward, we want to stay connected as a team (offsides are in play in applicable to your division)

When we are building from the goalkeeper (in games), we want to:

- Play to the area with the least amount of defenders

- Play quickly out of the back if the option is on

- Play shorter/quicker passes rather than kicking it long

Coaching Points

- Where is the quickest/easiest pass?

Questions

- Why do we pass the ball?

- When we pass the ball, what does it do to the other team?
