Description

MOMENT: IN POSSESSION

PRINCIPLE: PENETRATION - FINISHING

CAPABILITIES: TECHNIQUE, MOVEMENT

CORE SKILLS: FINISHING

OVERARCHING LEARNING OUTCOME:

First time finishing session focused on correct ball striking technique and social corner - team had disappointing tournament last week (lost in a shoot-out) - by keeping the session focused on what all kids enjoy; scoring goals

COACHING POINTS:

  • Provide information on three key areas of ball striking - standing foot position, kinetic chain and follow through
  • Discuss different techniques for producing different types of shot

BEFORE SHOOTING, CAN YOU…

  • See the goalkeeper and goal, decide where the ball needs to go and what technique you could use - have an idea in your mind
  • Get into a good position to receive a pass to allow the best technique
  • Adapt you position and technique to the ball as it is travelling

INDICATORS OF UNDERSTANDING:

  • Players able to make decisions about what techniques to use during play rather than “hit and hope”
  • Make consistently good contact with the ball
  • Shooting with confidence

PLAYER ENGAGEMENT:

  • Welcome players as they arrive - explain the format of the session, check in with how they are feeling after the tournament
  • Start and end with familiar activities but with adjustments to make them feel fresh and challenging
  • Provide opportunities for fun and ownership - particularly in the final activity

COACH BEHAVIOURS:

  • Share session plan with colleagues in good time
  • Prepare play area to allow smooth transitions between activities, especially during carousel phase
  • Speak to players individually or in small groups (during carousel especially) to target key areas to improve and adjust

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Public park - check play area is suitable before set up - arrive early
  • Mixed weather, advise parents to bring drinks/sun cream and waterproof jackets for session

LINK TO MATCHDAY:

  • Use SSG as the technical part of the warm up
  • Use the pregame/midgame/endgame discussion to refer back to the core principle of PENETRATION and how that gives us a chance to shoot
  • Matchday target: Shots on goal - players decide gold/silver/bronze threshold. Subs count to stay engaged

Technical Tactical
Decisions, Positional Flexibility, Scanning, Understanding of the Game - as part of a standard game scenario
Technical Physical
ABC (Agility, Balance, Coordination), Endurance, Physical Resilience, Speed, Strength - as part of a standard game scenario

ARRIVAL MINI GAME (10 mins)

INTENDED ACTIVITY OUTCOME:

Welcome the players as they arrive. Engage them with a quick catch up and prepare for the session by introducing the learning outcomes at the halfway stage

PRACTICE SPECTRUM: OVERLOAD / MATCHED UP

ACTIVITY TYPE: WHOLE GAME

PLAY AREA: 15x30m

DURATION: 20mins - 2x 10min blocks with discussion in the middle

DELIVERY INFO:

  • As players arrive, they are allocated into teams and join the ongoing match
  • Goals are scored by dribbling through the gates at each end of the pitch
  • Once the coach allocates the players, they are responsible for the running of the game
  • Gives coach a chance to engage with players / parents / other coaches before the session begins and the players have ownership of their activity
  • Once the sessions starts, bring the players into a group and introduce them to the intended outcomes of the session - find out what they understand of the moment / principle / capabilities / core skills
  • Ask the players to keep these in mind for the rest of the session and restart the match with goals now in place but set back 3m from the play area to prevent defenders standing directly in front

COACHING POINTS:

  • Minimal intervention prior to the session introduction
  • Ask questions of players individually about what they are thinking / feeling during the activity

PROGRESSIONS:

  • None - allow the players a free game with only the learning outcomes in their mind - this is just an introduction element to help with engagement and focus

STEP CONSIDERATIONS:

  • SPACE - Play area is same size for all activities - similar to normal pitch proportions but smaller to accommodate 5v5 games with increased touches and less space available to encourage SUPPORT
  • TASK - Introduction to the session - kids come to football to play matches so this is good to get them focused in on the game immediately
  • EQUIPMENT - cones to mark pitch, different colours for goals, bibs (ideally matching the bibs) and 2-3 balls at the side of the pitch to help with restarts. Not too many balls to ensure players respect the equipment and go and get any lost balls if needed
  • PEOPLE - Coaches allocate teams as players arrive to ensure that the game is even and balanced. If more or less players than expected the coach has the chance to ensure teams and players are well matched

  • Can you try to decide on a technique before shooting? Look at the pass and make a quick decision about where you want to score
  • Try to use the instep or side foot to give you more control of the shot
  • Try to make sure you use your kinetic chain to regulate your power. Power is not the priority, but you should still try to make strong contact to beat a goalkeeper
  • Try and tell your teammates where you want the pass so that they can put the ball in a good position for you to strike it well

PROGRESSIONS:

  • Add a goalkeeper or defender to engage in a 1v1

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Ball striking as a priority but with ancillary benefits to all aspects
Technical Tactical
Decisions, Positional Flexibility, Scanning, Set Piece Strategies, Understanding of the Game are all covered
Technical Physical
ABC (Agility, Balance, Coordination), Endurance, Physical Resilience, Speed, Strength are all involved to different extents depending on session focus, pitch size etc
Technical Psychological

Technical Social
Coachability, Communication, Leadership, Sportsmanship, Teamwork - standard game scenario

SHOOTING SSG (30 mins)

INTENDED ACTIVITY OUTCOME:

Apply practiced techniques in a game setting, with scoring zones and conditions that replicate the previous activities

PRACTICE SPECTRUM: MATCHED UP (OCCASIONAL OVERLOAD)

ACTIVITY TYPE: SSG

PLAY AREA: 15x30m

DURATION: 25mins

DELIVERY INFO:

  • Players into two teams of balanced ability, each with a goalkeeper
  • One goal at each end with a small penalty box and a central scoring zone 3x3m around the centre spot. 2 additional footballs stationed off the pitch at each end and either side of the halfway line
  • In each goal there are a cone in each bottom corner and a bib in each upper corner, these are additional point scoring targets
  • Standard rules, with the exception of when the ball goes out of play. Whoever puts the ball out must go and get it, play continues from the nearest additional ball
  • When a player scores, they come to the side of the pitch and pick a flat marker with a number on the underside. This is how many points that goal is worth and vary from 0-3
  • Additional points are awarded depending on how the goal is scored as follows - First time finish +1, Bottom corner +1, Top corner +2, From the middle scoring zone +2
  • Also, if a defender blocks the shot within 1m of the kick, the shooting team lose 1 point

COACHING POINTS:

  • Try to keep the ball in play to create another chance - clearing the ball might be a disadvantage if you have to get it
  • Can you try and think about the techniques we’ve used today?
  • If the players make a “mistake” ask them what they were thinking before commenting further

STEP CONSIDERATIONS:

  • SPACE - Adjust the pitch size to accommodate a suitable area for the number of players. Consider adjusting the shape by cutting off the corners and forming an octagonal or hexagonal shape to force more play towards the scoring zone
  • TASK - Goals are allowed but more challenging attempts are worth higher rewards. Having the potential for zero points for scoring “standard” goals encourages risk
  • EQUIPMENT - goals, cones, bibs - targets instead of bibs if you have them
  • PEOPLE - Players get to come and select points from random discs for their goals, which is a fun and gamified activity, allowing for positive and playful interactions
