This session is intended to improve our team defending when THEY have the ball. We are in a 1442 flat. Our opponent will most likely play a 433 with 2 holding midfielders.

Objective: Improve our back four defending
Organization: Grid that is 28x30 and divided into four zones. Two 6 yard zones in the middle and two 8 yard zones on the end.
Instructions: Four players in the middle pass the ball and try to break the defensive line to their two attackers who try to score in the goal. Opposing team must execute pressure cover balance and pinch. If the ball breaks the line they need to recover and block the blue team from scoring.
Coaching Points: (1) defensive shape, (2) recovery if beat.

Organization: 11v11 full field
Coaching Points: They Phase 1 - (1) starting positions, (2) press together. They Phase 2 - (1) Line of confrontation, (2) compaction, (3) midfield shape, (4) don't chase. They Phase 3 - (1) mid to low block, (2) hitting our spots, (3) force wide keep them wide, (4) mark int he box.

Objective: improve our ability to mark in the box and clear the ball.
Organization: 3v2 organized at the top of the box with wide passers and servers.
Instructions: ball played wide, defenders have to recover and mark.
Variations: (1) add late midfielder, (2) add 2nd service if the ball isn't cleared so they have to work on the stepping and setting the line, (3) allow for wide player to cut inside or pass the ball back.
Coaching Points: (1) Goal side, ball side, (2) Touch tight on marking, (3) Challenge for the ball, (4) Blocks shots, crosses., (5) Clearances high and away, (6) GK communication.

Rondo 8v2 (15 mins)
Objective: mental and physical activation game for the training session.
Set-up: 10x10 grid. 10 players.
Instructions: players play 1 touch keep away. If the defenders win the ball they drop the vests and transition quickly into the possession.
Timing: Play 4 minutes, stretch on their own 2 minutes, play 4 minutes then go into dynamic stretch.
Coaching Points: (1) quality of passes, (2) receiving the ball open across our body, (3) proper passing and receiving, movement to fill in spaces, fast transitions from defending to attacking and from attacking to defending.
Variations: (1) Make it a competition. Each team sends over 2 defenders. Play for 1 minute or until a team gets a certain number of passes in a row (ex 10). Keep score.
