Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Teach receiving the ball and the use of the first touch
Description
The objective of this session is to teach receiving the ball and the use of the first touch
- Receiving the ball: The moment the player gets the ball
- First touch: a player's ability to control a pass and make the ball do what they want
- The use: Does the player control the first touch and can create a positive forward motion either by dribbling or passing
Our main coaching points for the session:
- Scanning and awareness
- Looking intentionally away from the ball to seek information from teammates, opponents and space on the field
- Looking intentionally away from the ball to seek information from teammates, opponents and space on the field
- A positive first touch of the ball
- Upon receiving the ball can your first touch of the ball help in moving the ball forward and up the field
- When the ball touches your foot you raise your head to see the options ahead of you
- Body positioning
- Is your body open so you can move forward upon receiving the ball
- Receiving the ball on your opposite foot as you open up the body
- Protection of the ball
- When under pressure, make sure that your body is between the ball and the defender

- 4 Yellow cones that mark the boundary
- Soccer balls behind each line
To teach receiving of the ball and the use of the first touch
Instructions:Two teams
Each team has a ball (Starting from Blue Player 1 and Purple Player 1)
The Blue team is passing the ball from Player 1 to Player 2 (East West) while the Purple team is passing the ball from Player 1 to Player 2 (North South)
They must make 3 passes without losing possession from one side to the other
The emphasis is on scanning and awareness, knowing where the other players are amongst the chaos in the middle.
Having a positive first touch moving forward is also a key component
Maintaining possession is also a key factor cause if we cannot maintain control of the ball, we will not be able to move forward in the game
Coaching Points:
- Scanning over one's shoulder from left to right to see where the defenders are
- Being aware before receiving or while having the ball as to where your teammates are and where is the open space to move forward
- In this coaching point we are stressing on moving forward with the ball
- A positive first touch is not forcing the play but rather making that first touch into an area that can create space and forward movement on the attack
- Is my back to the play
- Am I opening up as I receive so that I can create a positive touch moving forward
- Am I receiving the ball with the proper foot so that we also are protecting the ball from the defenders
- It is one thing to receive the ball but if your first touch is too far, or into congestion then it will be hard to protect and maintain possession
- How do I position my body under pressure in order to maintain possession

- 4 Yellow cones that mark the boundary
- Soccer balls behind each line
Instructions:
- Now we are adding defence to the game
- The objective is the same as the small warm up however with some adversary
- We are keeping the 5v5 in the middle with our 2 side players from each team on the ends
- The coach introduces the ball to a Blue player
- We want the ball moving forward and therefore from making positive first touches
- We also want to maintain possession
- If the Blue team can move the ball from one side to the other, they receive a point
- They will receive another if they can move the ball back to the opposite side, etc.
- If and when the Purple team intercepts the ball or creates a turnover, they quickly become on the attack and the Blue team become the defenders
- The Purple team must secure the ball and move it out of trouble either by running with the ball or passing it
- The purple team have the same goal and objective as the Blue team when they had possession.
- Maintain control, protect the ball, be aware of the Blue team and move it positively forward.
Progression:
1. The player on the end changes with the one who made them the pass
With this progression, we want the one who received the ball to turn their first touch into a positive one and move it forward
