Introduction (15 mins)

Organization:

  • Two rhombi created by cones. Distance between them can 7-8m, but can be adjusted to preference.
  • White team vs Red team, 7-8 players on each.
  • One ball per team, pattern-play competition.

Instructions:

  • Teams combine 10 passes (pass and follow) on each rhombi, after 10 passes teams have to score on any of the mini goals (facing out).
  • Progression: add defender.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Passing: Can we direct a crisp pass to our teammate, one the ground with the inside of the foot?
  • Receiving: On toes, opening hips in order to play the next pass.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Add defender.

Main Activity (30 mins)

Organization:

  • Use defensive third of the field.
  • White team: 1,2, 4, 5, 3, 6 + target players (10, 8).
  • Red team: 4 players. Start activity and restarts behind contention line (where target players are).
  • Restarts start with goalkeeper.

Instructions:

  • Goalkeeper starts game. (1) White team tries to play to a target player (1 point), or try to dribble past contention line (1 point).
  • Red team: steals and scores (2 points). 4-minute intervals.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Encourage regular buildout shape with CBs getting wide inside the box and outside backs wide and higher.
  • Through the activity, ask the center midfielder to drop in all the way to the box.
    • Can I receive and turn quickly? (If space available)
    • If so, can I dribble and engage opposition to then (1) pass to an open teammate or (2) keep dribbling.
    • Before I receive, how can I get an idea of how open will I be? (Scan around)
