Warm Up Modified Rondo (10 mins)

Method:

Warm Up Session

12 players split into 4 groups of 3, area of say 20m x 20m, small goals on each corner, in the middle of the square, balance a football on top of a cone, surrounded by circle of flat disc markers.

One group of 3 go inside, try to win back ball from outside players.  Outside players trying to pass ball around and  while the rest are on outside, trying to pass ball around an when chance arises pass ball through centre of the rectangle and knock ball off the cone.

Group in middle cannot go inside area with the flat disc markers.

If middle group win ball back, then score in small goals.

Play for 12 mins, switch group in middle every 3 mins.

Coaching Points:

Players on outside should move the ball quickly, isolate the middle players on one side and switch, identifying where space is to allow a player a chance to play pass through centre and knock ball off cone.

Central players to focus on pressing (nearest to the ball), while others cover (i.e. move to side where pass is going), while also covering the through pass (i.e. the pass to attempt to knock ball off cone.

Focus on hard work, non stop effort from players in middle, but being smart too, i.e. nearest to ball goes, shift as a unit around the rectangle.

Playing through a screen (25 mins)

Method:

3+2 v 1 Rondo, focused on switching play, 20m x 20m as per previous session.

3  blue and 2 yellow v 1 green in the half where the ball is, and 2 green in middle trying to block the through pass. 6 passes and then the team can transfer, below head height, through to the other half where the reds will then play with the 1 yellow player against 1 green, and 2 greens in middle. The greens will try to win the ball back and score in mini goals.

Switch group trying to win ball back every 3 mins. Play for 12 mins.

Potential progression is to allow 2/3 who are trying to win ball back to enter the rectangle each side.

Do same again and play for further 12 mins.

Coaching Points

  • Be confident on ball, wait for defender to press then move the ball.
  • Be patient to wait for the gap, yet be decisive when gap opens and play ball with correct weight (no soft passes!) through the gap.
  • Group waiting for the switch pass to remain aware and alert ready to receive, and moving to create passing angles and options.

Playing out in a 2-3-1 using CM/No6 (20 mins)

Method:

Set up on half of 7 a side pitch, 6+ GK reds playing out against 5 blues.

Target is to play forward, involving the CM/No 6 in the play, in a 2-3-1 formation.

Every 3-4 turns, coach to feed ball direct to blue attacking team to try and score quickly.

20 mins

Coaching Points:

  • Defenders to start wide to receive ball from GK
  • GK to pass on to defenders back foot, allowing them to receive ball to play forward.
  • As opposition shift and press to win the ball back, CM/No6 to drop towards middle of defence to receive the ball, and either turn if unmarked or look to play bounce pass back to GK or opposite defender to allow switch of play or to winger on the turn if space created behind defender.
  • If attacker moves to too far to one side prior to GK releasing ball, then CM should look to drop and receive ball directly.
  • Work both sides.
  • Concentrate on 3rd man (i.e. winger in the above scenario) picking up on body position/angle of receiving CM/No6 so as to time run for the pass.
  • Weight and angle of pass to CM important, make sure can control ball away from opposition, and if pass being played to allow first time pass from CM, make sure with decent pace and correct angle for 3rd man runner.

Finish session with SSG game, normal rules, 6 v 6, further 15 mins
