Warm up 6v2 (15 mins)

Warm up: 6V2 warm up

AREA: varies on ability

3 set of 4 minutes with 1 minute recovery: 15 minutes in total

WHAT: Pressing technique and recognizing when to jump and not use energy unnecessarily.

WHERE : opposition half of the pitch the higher up the better.

WHO: attacking unit, midfield, defending unit

Objective: improve our communication and ability to win the ball high up the pitch.

Role of opposition: Maintain good possession.

Organization:

Two rondos, multiple touches, both rondos send in two players to press opposition possession

Rules:

Multiple touches to begin with

If defending team win ball you can  leave and send in two more team mates.

3v3 Tech Practice (15 mins)

THEME/FUNCTION

Defending technical practice, can we stop the attack. Win the ball and transition to attack.

OBJECTIVE/WHY:

A Practice designed to improve players pressing triggers, making play predictable, win it and score.

WHERE: Oppositions half.

WHO: Start with our attacking unit and works back.

ORGANIZATION/HOW:

  • Area: 15 x 15 m ) two area
  • 3 Blues v  3 Reds
  • 1 blue starts in opposition half, press, predictable can you win it.
  • Red can you create a successful build up phase into the Red half and create a 3v2
  • Blue can we move with the ball slow down the attack nd prevent red from scoring.
  • If blue team win the ball can we play forward and score.
  • Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing.
  • Team in possession must complete at least 3 passes before transfer.
COACHING POINTS
  • Trigger, make it predictable
  • Communicate
  • Decision making with the two supporting blue players.
  • Communicate
  • Decision Making – speed of thought, don`t wait for the ball to arrive be on the front foot. Hips across, arms across.

5v5+5 Tech Practice (15 mins)

THEME/FUNCTION

Defending using a 5v5+5 small game practice

OBJECTIVE/WHY:

A Practice designed to improve players pressing triggers, making play predictable, win it

WHERE: Oppositions half.

WHO:  Start with our attacking unit and works back ways

ORGANISATION/HOW:

  • Area: 40 x 30 metres
  • 5 Blues v 5 Yellows + 5 Reds
  • 5 Blues v 2 Yellows in Zone 1, 3 Yellows (screening) in Zone 2, 5 Reds in Zone 3
  • Game starts with 5 Blues v 2 Yellows with the Blue in possession with emphasis on transferring the ball through Zone 2 into Zone 3 to Red Team as seen above.
  • If Blue team are successful in transferring the ball, 2 of the 3 Yellow players in Zone 2 must now move into Zone 3 and attempt to win the ball with the 2 players in Zone 1 now moving into Zone 2, Red team have same objective as Blue team.
  • If Yellow team win possession from Blue team, they must now transfer the ball to Red team and transition to attacking team, while Blue team now must transition to defend with 3 players in Zone 2 and 2 players in Zone 3 attempting to win the ball.
  • Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing.
  • Team in possession must complete at least 5 passes before transfer.
COACHING POINTS:
  • QOS weight timing disguise accuracy
  • Body shape to protect or move the ball 

  • AOS and distance – triangle/diamond shapes (spoke about it on Wed)

  • Width and depth – Penetrating Pass
  • Find the  space and see where  defender is

  • Decision Making – speed of thought, dont wait for the ball to arrive at your feet before you decide

  • Transitions to attack and defend TEMPO not JOGGING

NOTES

Demand high quality. If players of a high ability play one/ two touch football or modify into a 5v3 in end zones

4v2 and a 3v1 (15 mins)

THEME/WHAT

4V2 into 3v1 and 3v1

 DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE/WHY

A functional practice designed to improve players pressing of opponents and transitional moments

ORGANIZATION:
  • Area 30x 15 and 15x15 and 15x15
  • 10 Red players v 4 or 6  Yellow players with players set up as seen in diagram above
  • Can players work with players in their unit
  • Red team maintain  possession try to play through the 2 player Yellow press coming into grey zone first.
  • If yellow team win possession they communicate and break out individually into a smaller square to create a 3v1.
  • in both scenarios when 15 seconds elapse, move on.
  • Have a supply of footballs to keep the practice continually flowing

KEY FACTORS:
  •   Movement of Defenders (yellow)relative to movement of the ball and well-coordinated especially in first zone
  • · Can Yellow reduce the space as a unit eg one press one support, no split passes
  •   A quality press
  • · Immediate reaction on winning possession, can you break out and win your 3v1 as quickly as possible.
  • · Reds in  possession can you play with your eyes  up and recognize the moment to pass quickly through a gap.
  • Decision making and communication are vital for red and yellow

NOTES

Encourage ( RED) one/ two touch if players of good quality with the ball constantly rotation.

Game 7v7 (15 mins)

WHAT/THEME:

8v8 game.

DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE (TECHNIQUE / SKILL) 

A game  designed to improve the defensive organization of the team with a transition to attack.

WHERE:

Opposition half of the pitch.

WHO:

Front unit, Midfield unit and Defending unit.

ORGANIZATION
  • Area: Full Width of the box and to halfway line. 60mx40m
  • Blue formation 1>2>3>1 Red formation 1>2>3>1
  • Football

COACHING POINTS:

  • Starting Positions – narrow and compact units and individuals, make it difficult for attacking team to play through passes.
  • As center back moves forward in possession attacker curves his run to cut off a pass to Second Center back and keeper.
  • Winger on opposite side tucks in to effect other CB and FB
  • Midfield lock on man for man.
  • The rest of the team move in relation to this trapping the ball on one side of the pitch
  • Communication say what you see as you look up the field.Good body shape when defending see ball and opponent.
  • Defender be prepared for a long ball.
  • When ball is won, look to play forward as quickly as possible through quality passing.

PROGRESSION:

Goal wont count unless all of team is in opponents half.

Goal scored 5 seconds after a transition in opponents half is worth 2.
