For assignment 9 of my UEFA B License i was asked to design a session for defending in the final 3rd plus relating it to a physical attribute. The physical attribute i have chosen is strength. Here this session will look to develop strength by doing a 15 minute strength related exercises with and without the ball and then defending in the final 3rd session to show how this will help your defensive attributes.

Organisation
Working with 16 players - 14 outfield plus 2 GK's.
Only working in half a park.
2 large 11 a side goals plus 2 small fun 4 goals.
Activity
In this session we are going to look at defending in the final 3rd firstly with the back 4 then progressing into adding midfierlders as well.
Here in component 1 it will start off as 6 v 4.
The GK will pass the ball out to either the right or the left back.
From there they will drive forward and play a successful pass into the small sided goal.
As soon as the ball hits the back of the net the play will start from the opposite side.
Here the defenders will shuffle across to defend against the 6 attackers.
The other defender will try to get back in and recover to re-create a back 4.
The attackers are to shoot into the large 11 a side goal and if the defenders win the ball the can shoot into the small sided goals.
Coaching Points
Defenders to work together when shuffling across
Staying narrow not allowing large gaps between players
When engaging a player try to create a 1v1 with them
Body shape (side on) trying to cut out any pass showing them away from the goal
Be aggressive
Timing tackles

Here in component 1 option 2 it will start off as 6 v 4.
The GK will pass the ball out to either the right or the left back.
From there they will drive forward and play a successful pass into the small sided goal.
Progression
As soon as the ball hits the back of the net the play will start from the same side.
Here the defenders will shuffle across to defend against the 6 attackers.
Now one of the centre defenders will have to go across to close down the attacker.
This will happen when the full back tucks in to take the 2nd striker and allow the other centre defender to go across and pick up the 1st striker.
The other defender will try to get back in and recover to re-create a back 4.
The attackers are to shoot into the large 11 a side goal and if the defenders win the ball the can shoot into the small sided goals.

Body shape (side on) trying to cut out any pass showing them away from the goal

Timing tackles
Delay attackers to allow time for recovering defender to get back in shape

In this session we are going to look at defending in the final 3rd firstly with the back 4 then progressing into adding midfierlders as well.
Here in component 1 option3 it will start off as 6 v 5.
The GK will pass the ball out to either the right or the left back.
From there they will drive forward and play a successful pass into the small sided goal.
Introduction of a central midfielder.
As soon as the ball hits the back of the net the play will start from the opposite side.
The central midfielder will go over to support the defender pressing the attacker.
If the attacking player gets past the 1st defender the central midfielder will then cover and press the attacker.
The defender who was passed by the attacker will get back in and then cover the central midfielder who is now doing the pressing.
The other defender will try to get back in and recover to re-create a back 4.
The attackers are to shoot into the large 11 a side goal and if the defenders win the ball the can shoot into the small sided goals.

Activity
Looking back at the S.W.O.T analysis of the team during pre season the results showed that as the team is currently in the transition stage of moving from 7 a side to 11s that our defensive shape and also personal defensive attributes needed improving. In this session we are going to look at defending in the final 3rd firstly with the back 4 then progressing into adding midfierlders as well.
Here in component 1 it will start off as 6 v 4.

Progression
Introduction of a central midfielder.
As soon as the ball hits the back of the net the play will start from the same side.
The central midfielder will go over to press the attacker coming out of their position .
This will allow the defenders to stay in their position and keep their shape.
If the centre midfielder isnt the closest player to the ball and one of the defenders is the centre midfielder could drop into the defenders position to allow the defender to go and press the ball.
The other defender will try to get back in and recover to re-create a back 4.
The attackers are to shoot into the large 11 a side goal and if the defenders win the ball the can shoot into the small sided goals.

Organisation
16 players - 14 outfield plus 2 gk.
8v8
3 zones - defensive, middle and attacking 3rd.
Wide areas identified as well.
Activity
Defending in the final 3rd conditioned game (component 2).
3 zoned game 8v8 working into the large goals.
Reds shaped up in a 4-2-1 formation and blues set up in a 1-4-2 formation.
Only when the team are in possession of the ball can they use the wide areas.
Defending team must stay within the lines and focus on being compact and narrow.
No defending players are allowed to enter the wide areas just work in relation.
Players can advance between the 3 zones but not drop back further than their original zone. (For example the midfielder can go and support the striker but can't drop back in to cover the defender).
Progression
Conditions are removed defending players can go into the wide areas to defend crosses and press the ball.
Players can also drop back a zone to help defend.
Coaching Points
Players are looking to use coaching points learned in component 1.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation
16 players - 9v7
7 red players v 9 blue players (creating an overload against defending team
Working in just over half a pitch using full width.
Activity
Free play phase of play.
Coach is looking for times in the game when defending team don't do what was worked on in component 1.
The coach is then looking to show the team the solution and what could have been done in that situation then let the play go again and hopefully the team will perform better in that situation.
The blues will be shooting into the large 11 a side goal.
If the reds win the ball they look to find the green feeder for a goal.
Each time the ball goes behind for a goal kick the play will re start from the feeder.

Physcial Preparation Strength
Organisation
Working with a squad of 16 players.
Players will be in groups of 2.
Working within the area of the 18 yard box spread out.
Activity
Physical preparation session designed to work in relation to the overall theme of the session.
Looking to develop strength as a physcial attribute and how it can help us with our defensive principles.
Players will be split up into pairs.
Firstly they will go into a game related situation of one player shielding the ball while the other defends.
The aim of the exercise is for the player is possession of the ball to hold off the defender whilst keeping possession of the ball and for the defender to try and gain possession of the ball from the other player.
The rules are the player shielding the ball must have a foot on the ball and keep control.
The defender only rule is that they cant tackle through the legs.
The exercise will last for 1 minute then they players will switch positions and repeat.
This exercise will be done 3 times changing partners in the process. total 6 mins.
2nd Exercise
Both players will be facing each other with 1 players having the ball in their hands.
That player will be looking to keep hold of the ball for as long as they can without the other player managing to grab the ball from their grasp.
If the other player wins possession of the ball the roles reverse and the other player tries to get the ball.
Once again this exercise will last for 1 minute then players will switch partners and repeated 3 times.
3rd Exercise
Players will be both in the push up position with arms straight.
The aim of the exercise is to try and pull your partners arm away from them making them fall whilst keeping your balance at the same time.
The exericse will last for a period of 1 minute and repeated 3 times switching partners in the process.
Coaching Points
feet positioning to help with balance/ leg strength
bend the knees to have low centre of gravity core strength
use your arms working on upper body strength
be aggressive trying to win the ball
