Description

Retaining possesion can tire the opponent and create space by moving the opposition. Its a lot physically demanding on the team that doesnt have possesion of the ball.

  • Why do we pass the ball - to move the opposition which will then create space.
  • Players should be encouraged to enjoy being in possesion.
  • Offer good angles of support to the player on the ball, continually adapting positioning based on the movement of opponents and team-mates.
  • Challenge players to show good use of passing, close control and decision making.
  • Possesion based team look to utilise all the space available and the overload.
  • In defensive transition, how quickly do players react to prevent a goal.
  • In attacking transition, the chasing team look to be positive and play quickly to attack one of the goals. They need to make varied, dynamic movements, this could involve dummy runs.
  • In terms of game management, this game allows players to become familiar with using possesion (under pressure) to control the tempo of a match (ie to see the game out)
  • Game allows midfielders to work together to build possesion or attack quickly through midfield, and the nature of it means it stays competitive up until the last second
  • Useful for incorporating goalkeepers into a possesion exercise, testing distribution with the their feet and also their shot stopping.

COACHING POINTS

Look to build up your attacks patiently

Possession of the ball can be a great form of defence

Retaining The Ball To Play Forward (20 mins)

Equipment

Flat markers to mark out playing area.

Bibs

Supply of footballs near the sides of the pitches.

3 players in "intercepting zone"

3-5 players in "creating zones"

Retaining the ball to play forward or behind the defender

Objective - players will work on keeping the ball to play it forward.

15-20 Minutes

  • First few minutes "get used to the game"
  • One group (reds) must retain the ball for x passes (example 5 passes for team of 4 dependant on ability) to get a point or play a forward ball to a player in the other zone to get a point at any time. (3v1,4v1, 5v1 in end zones, dependant on available numbers)
  • Alternate sides to restart when ball is dead.
  • Team in the middle (blues) sends one player in to press the ball and just pass the ball to their team mates in the middle to pass the ball to the mini goal, or dribble the ball and stop it on the line to get a point.
  • Remaining blues in the middle zone (intercepting) try to intercept or block the forward pass, if they intercept - they play the pass to a mini goal or a coach on the sides.
  • If ball goes to other side, another player from blues then presses whilst the blue player from previous zone then drops into the middle (intercepting) zone.

Coaching points

  • Don't force the pass
  • Use questioning to develop player understanding (when can you play a forward pass to the other zone)
  • If you see the forward pass, don't turn it down, be brave and try, don`t be afraid of making mistakes.
  • Be patient in possession, keep it to play forward - if the pass isn't on - move into space with the ball.
  • Get seen, always available for a pass.
  • Receiving group, always be available for a through ball, use eye contact to communicate if youre ready to receive the pass.
  • Look for opportunities to play the ball forward.
  • Can we make the team out of possesion feel "fed up" by keeping possesion?

Technical - Building The Attack (20 mins)

Equipment.

2 x goals

Goalkeeper gloves

watch

Bibs

Footballs

8 - 10 players - can scale, one team will have will have an overload (10 players would involve two teams of 4, with one team able to use the goalkeepers which will be 6v4 overload)

1 team (yellow bibs) - possession team, keep the ball using the goalkeepers / target players (overload).

Other team (red bibs) if they win ball back, the team can score in either goal. If they score they become the team in possession (using the target players / goalkeepers) - Scoring earns you possession, and that team that wins possession tries to keep possession to the end of the 6 minute game.

  • 6 minute game (target is 3x 6 minute games)
  • Scoring earns you possession.
  • The team that has the possession at the end of the 6 minutes wins the game.
  • If one team puts the ball out of play, it can be passed or dribbled back in by the other team from the place it left the pitch.
  • Whilst its important that the focus is on "keeping possession", its important that the defending team has a chance of success of winning possession, if the attacking team are finding it too easy to keep possession, consider making the pitch smaller or the goals bigger to improve the defending teams chances.

End Game Session

Equipment

2x Goals

2x Clickers to count total passes

2x Teams

2x different colour bibs

13 balls ready to restart play.

The two teams are challenged with patiently building up play with a reward for the total number of passes they can put together in the overall game and a bonus for multiple-pass goal scoring moves.

i.e. if you score after 9 passes? That's 9 bonus points your team picks up at the end of the game.

If a ball goes out of play, kick in or dribble in to restart play.
