1-4-4-2 Spartan Diamond - Defensive Shape (15 mins)

Red team set up in 1-4-4-2 Spartan Diamond -- working on team defensive shape

     - Hunt in a pack

Blue team set up in a 4-3-3 with two ACMs

Blue team (in possession) -- slowly pass the ball to various spots on the field

Red team (out-of-possession) -- adjusts team shape (in ideal setting)

DENY PENETRATION -- KEEP OPPONENT IN FRONT

MAKE PLAY PREDICTABLE

KEEP VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL SPACE COMPACT (20-30 yard back-to-front and side-to-side)

Blue CB - Strongside forward gets to outside position to force internally

Blue OB - Strongside forward back presses (weakside forward comes high to cut off switch between blue CBs while #10 cuts off or baits pass to blue #6) while strongside mezzala holds inside and covers passing lane (gradually engage if OB dribbles along sideline)

Blue OB plays to Blue W - Strongside OB steps (bottom of circle) to prevent turn while CBs and weakside OB drop to covering positions

NOTE: HCM / Weakside Mezzala / CBs take up quality covering positions and anticipate intercepting passes

IF Blue is able to switch play through the back or their #6:

   - Red looks to shift as a compact unit while forcing play wide -- new strongside mezzala stays tucked in and cuts off passing lanes while gradually engaging dribbler

   - Red forwards switch roles (weakside forward may need to seek out blue #6 to cover

   - Red MUST sprint across to get back into covering positions to prevent play through the center of midfield.

   - Red OB (if caught in 1v1 or 2v1 situation) denies penetration and stays in front of the ball

CPs: Be aware of opponent looking long over top (read opponent body position -- backline drop if needed)

Looking to win possession in one of three ways:

     1) Intercepting passes

     2) Tackling AFTER opponent poor touch

     3) Opponent error out-of-bounds
