FINAL THIRD SSG (20 mins)

IN POSSESSION / FINAL THIRD / SSG

WELSH WAY PRINCIPLES -

Understand when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.

ORGANISATION / AREA SIZE

40 x 30m with half way line

Play 4 v 4 +2 common players playing on each line (In Yellow) +2 GK

Play 4 x 3 minute periods with 2 min break.

EXPLANATION

The objective of the team n possession is to try and combine in your own half with a minimum of three passes (5v2) with a common (Yellow) player/s to release the opposite common (Yellow) player who the drives into the final third in a 3v2 against the opposition.

HOW

Coach to work with ONE team only, in this case the reds in term of th ein possession principles. If the blues (oppostition) win the ball they will still adhere to the main in possession principles but WILL NOT be coached on how/where/who exploits the reds.

They will be managed to ensure realism of th epractice. If they are getting too much success, the coach may want to restrict their touches or time on the ball.

CONDITIONS, CHALLENGES & TARGETS

1. Players breaking into the final third must try to utilise the spare player / numerical advantage to create opportunities to combine, create and finish.

2. Limited touches in possession on the outside in the 'build up half' (Eg 2 or 3 touches max) GK can be utilised.

3. First time finish or a managed countdown can be utilised to encourage realism.

4 Common players cant score.

5. Limited touches / time for the opposition when in possession.
