Passing Practice (15 mins)

Frame

Today I aim to improve our pressing our opponent in the front third.

Main Moment : BPO

Key Principal: Press the ball carrier immediately

What? Win the ball back high up the pitch

Who? 7-9-11-10-6-8

When? BPO

Where? Our front third of the pitch

Why? Opponents playing out from the back too easily

Passing Practice

14 players split into 2 X 7 players completing the same drill at either end of the pitch.

Practice starts with 6 passing to 7 with 6 following his pass and puting passive pressure on 7's touch.

#6 then takes 7's place and 7 passes to 4 and follows in to press 4's touch. The process repeats as per diagram.

Progression

Change direction of passing sequence.

After 1 -2 minutes add another ball, then another.

Increase the speed and intensity of the press.

Players can now play in a random sequence to whoever they choose. ( Back to one ball)

Positioning Game

Possitioning Game

Yellow Team 1-4-2 formation

Blue Team Bouncer + 2-1-3 Formation

Area - Half Pitch

Play starts with GK who has drop off zone that the blue tema can't enter until one yellow defender has taken his first touch.

The yellow teams objective is to keep possession off the blues by using both the GK (feet only) and the end bouncer.

The blue teams objective is to win the ball back as quickly as possible and score in against the GK in the big goal.

For variation, the coach will occasionally play to the blue bouncer and the blues can start the attack and the yellow defenders can press.

Progression

Narrow the pich

Remove drop off zone

Blue bouncer steps in field as an extra attacker and the coach becomes the bouncer.

Team Task

Win the ball back as quickly as possible in the opponents defensive third.

Player Tasks

7-9-11

Press the ball carrier and try and win the ball back as soon as possible.

Deny the defenders time and space to play out.

If you can't win the ball, can you block passing lanes and prevent passes beyond you?

Can you work together to force the defenders to play into congested areas?

If the opposition passes backwards, can you press tightly on your closest opposing

defender

6-8

If the opponent by-pass our front 3, can you win the ball back imediatley?

Deny the opponent time and space to play forward.

If you can't win the ball, can you block passing lanes and prevent passes beyond you?

Can you communicate to our 7-9-11 the best way to force opposing defenders to play out?

Coaches Cues

When the opponent has the ball, can we look to win the ball back as high as possible and as quickly as possible?

When they have the ball, can we make the pitch as small as possible?

If you can't tackle your opponent, can you force them to play backwards or sqaure?

If you can't win it back quickly, can we deny them time and space to build up play?

When in BPO, can you anticipate where the next pass is likely to go and press that player early?

If you are not able to press the ball carrier immediatly, you communicate with your team mates whether to press or block passing lanes?

Area Half Pitch

Yellow team 1-4-2 formation

Blue team 2-1-3 formation

+ 1 Joker who plays for both teams.

The joker can be tackled by the opposing team, however, the joker can't tackle any team.

Play starts with GK who plays a shorter game rolling or passing to defenders.

The yellow teams objective is to play out from the back and score in either of the two small goals on the half way line.

A drop off zone prevents blue players from pressing the GK. Once the GK has passed out of the drop of zone and a defender takes a touch the blue team can press.

The blue teams objective is win the back as quickly as possible and score in the big goal.

For variation, the coach can occasionally drive a ball into the GK from the half way line to re-start the play. GK must control the ball without using his hands and play out from the back.

Progression

Remove the drop off zone

Blue team must try and score within 10-15 seconds of winning the ball back.

When playing out, the GK cannot pass the ball back to the same defender he received it from.

Defenders cannot pass back to the GK once they have received a pass from the GK.

Team Task

Deny opposition defenders and GK time and space to play out from the back.

Player Tasks

7-9-11

Can you immediately press the player with the ball?

Do not allow time and space to pass to the goalkeeper?

Can you mark/pressure the opponents close to the ball?

Can you work as a unit and keep your relative distances short?

6-8

If they play through our 7-9-11, can you win the ball back as soon as possible?

Can you deny your opponents time and space?

If you can't win it back quickly, can you block passing lanes?

Coaches Cues

When we lose the ball can we quickly transition into BPO positions.

If your opponent has the ball, can we make the pitch as small as possible.

If you can't winit back immediately, can you reduce opponents time and space.

When the opponent passes backwards, can we increase our press on the closest defender?

If you can't win the ball back immediatley, can we block passing lanes?
