Main Activity

Organization:

  • 3 teams set-up as displayed, field divided into 3

Instructions:

  • Team in central or "safety" zone starts with the ball and attack any side to score.
  • Defending team has to win ball and get into the safety zone to transition and attack the other side
  • Getting to safety is 1 point, scoring is another. Teams keep track
  • Teams on offense retain possession if they score

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Breaking lines
  • Quick transitions
  • Overlap?
  • When to spread out? When to be compact?

Progressions:

  • Replace safety with gates in wide areas
  • No safety zone or gates, just a line to cross

Main Activity 2

Organization:

  • Two teams and 1 Neutral

Instructions:

  • Players combine for 5 passes in their box with help of the neutral for a point, then immediately play a give and go with the neutral for a bonus point while transitioning to defense in the other team box. They pass it to the other team then try to win it back with a teammate. Only 2 go, other 2 remain in own box watching and waiting to receive
  • If defenders win the ball, they have to try to play out of the opposition box to a teammate in theirs. 1 point for successfully getting to own box, bonus point for doing it without the neutral

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Shape in own box?
  • Pressing together
  • creating good angles of support

Progressions:

  • Increase pass count to 7 or 10, based on success and skill level
  • Increase transition defenders from 2 - 3
  • Add goals, players try to score after the give and go

Regressions:

  • No neutral, just pass across and play defense
  • Reduce transition defenders to 1
  • Reduce pass count to 4 0r 3
