Football/Soccer Session (Difficult): Switching the point of attack - Zone 3 (17/18)

Zone: 3
Session Objectives
What? To Improve the team’s ability to switch the point of attack
When? - When one side of the field is congested and we want to exploit space on the opposite side
Where? Middle third
Who? - #2,3,6,8 (in conjunction with #4,5,10)
Why? - To create effective possession when trying to play from one side of the field to the other
Team Tactical Principles
1. Spread out
2. Utilize space and triangulate to create passing options
3. Pass or dribble forward when possible or hold the ball
4. Support the attack
5. Create a 2v1 or 1v1
6. Create diagonal passing lines

Stage 1 (Activation 2) (15 mins)
TOTAL DURATION: 15 minutes
3 rounds of 3 min. / 1 min. recovery (in between each round) / 4 min. recovery (transition to next activity)
INTENSITY: Hard
DIMENSIONS: L20xW40yds (2 set ups).
DESCRIPTION:
1) Start unopposed. 2 balls going at once. Both teams looking to connect from target to target using the neutral. Prepare the players physically, psychologically and technically for the session (open body shape looking to receive the ball accross body).
2) Progression: 3v3 + 3N (1 inside, 2 outside). Objective is to transfer the ball from one target player to the other using the inside players.
3) Rotate neutral players.
COACHING POINTS:
- Weight of pass (depending on the environment)
- Ball possessor: identify dribble
- Creating passing lanes or pass.
- Body shape to receive the ball.
- 2nd attacker: open body to receive the ball in open space, movement.
- Understanding how to position against and around opponents to create passing lane.

Stage 2 (Orientation) (20 mins)
TOTAL DURATION: 20 minutes
3 rounds of 4 min. / 2 min. recovery (in between each round) / 4 min. recovery (transition to next activity)
INTENSITY: Hard
DIMENSIONS: L35xW55yds.
DESCRIPTION:
1) 4v4 + 3N. Objective is to transfer the ball from one side to other to score in open gate. Team that scores stays on (players on the outside ready to rotate in).
2) Rotate neutral players.

- Creating passing lanes
- Body shape to receive the ball
- Ball possessor: identify dribble or pass, don’t risk possession

Stage 3 (Teaching/Learning) (20 mins)
TOTAL DURATION: 20 minutes
3 rounds of 4 min. / 2 min. recovery (in between each round) / 4 min. recovery (transition to next activity)
INTENSITY: Hard
DIMENSIONS: L45xW55yds.
DESCRIPTION: 6+GKv6 + 2N. Objective is for reds to transfer the ball from one side to other to score in open gate. If yellows win the ball they can go to goal.

- Ball possessor: identify dribble or pass, don’t risk possession to create passing lane
- 2nd attacker: open body to receive the ball in open space, movement
- 3rd attacker: provide width

Stage 4 (Implementation) (20 mins)
TOTAL DURATION: 20 minutes
2 rounds of 9 min. / 2 min. recovery (in between each round)
INTENSITY: Hard

DESCRIPTION: Play a normal game. Encourage team to play to one wide player before going to goal (i.e. reward with 3 points if they score after playing wide). 6v6 + GKs.

DIMENSIONS:
The course is made up of six pairs of parallel cones, approximately 5-6 yards apart.
DESCRIPTION:
- Two players start at the same time from the first pair of cones, jog along the inside of the cones and do the various exercises on the way. After the last cone, they run back along the outside. On the way back, speed can be increased progressively as players warm up.
