Description

SESSION OBJECTIVE:

To give players a better understanding on how to maintain possession with the purpose of playing through their opponent and ultimately creating more goal scoring opportunities.

LEVEL:

  • U9-12

ATTACKING PRINCIPLES OF PLAY:

  • Creating Space
  • Passing and Support
  • Movement and Mobility
  • Creativity
  • Penetration

PART 1: POSSESSION BOX (Warmup - 15 mins)

  • This is an unopposed skill practice designed to help players develop their passing and receiving skills.
  • The practice helps players learn and develop the art of scanning whilst running with the ball and looking for passing options.

PART 2: MULTIDIRECTIONAL POSSESSION (Educate - 15 mins)

  • This is an opposed practice that can be played as a 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 game. This practice requires a minimum of 10 players in total e.g., 3v3 + 4 target players.
  • This practice challenges the players' ability to operate in tight spaces whilst trying to play penetrating passes that are (i) well-timed (ii) accurate (iii) correctly weighted and (iv) disguised.
  • This practice emphasizes the aim of the session: possession with purpose!

PART 3: SMALL-SIDED GAMES (Explore - 30mins)

  • This is small-sided game of 4v4 or 5v5 plus 2 goalkeepers (or rush defenders).
  • This small-sided game challenges players to make correct decisions (dribble, pass or shoot) whilst being in possession of the ball.
  • This small-sided game helps players understand the importance of support play off the ball e.g., intelligent and well-timed runs that provide good passing options for their teammate in possession of the ball.
  • This small-sided game is give players an opportunity to explore what they've been practicing in this sessions: possession with purpose.

Possession Box (Unopposed Warmup) (15 mins)

OVERVIEW:

  • Setup a 20 x 20 playing area
  • This is an unopposed (no tackling) skill practice/warm up.
  • Place 4 players on the outside of the area with a ball each and 4 players inside the area without balls. [If you have 10 or 12 players total, then make sure you have an even number of players both outside and inside the playing area. If you end up with an odd number of players, make sure you have fewer players on the inside of the area]
  • Players inside the area must move to receive the ball from one of the outside players. Once they have done this they then look to pass the ball to a different outside player.
  • This patten of receiving and passing continues for 90 secs. After each 90 sec round the players swap with each other - the inside players become the outside players and the outside players become the inside players.

COACHING DETAILS:

BODY SHAPE WHEN RECEIVING

  • It is important that inside players understand to receive with an open body position (or on the half-turn). This is to encourage them to move the ball forward with fewer touches.
  • If you are working with older or more skilled players, coach them the importance of approaching the ball on diagonal receiving angle.
  • Players must repeatedly "scan" (checking over each shoulder) as they perform the exercise.
TYPES OF FIRST TOUCH
  • Can players practice using different parts of each foot when taking their first touch? e.g., inside of the foot, sole of the foot, outside of the foot.
SCANNING
  • Scanning is the art of constantly checking over your shoulders to become aware of space to exploit, defenders to avoid, teammates in space and goal scoring opportunities. Scanning is super important!
  • Therefore, encourage players to constantly be scanning.
TEMPO & INTENSITY
  • Regardless of player age or skill level, encourage players to train at a good tempo and high intensity.

PASSING

  • Encourage players to pass with (i) precision/accuracy (ii) correct power/weight - not too hard, not too soft (iii) different parts of each foot (iv) disguise.

PROGRESSIONS:

  • Have insider players to only use their weaker foot when passing to outside players.
  • Ask inside players to play a one-two with the outside player before moving to pass to a different outside player.

Multidirectional Possession (15 mins)

OVERVIEW:
  • Setup a 30 x 30 playing area
  • This is an opposed (blocking + intercepting tackles) multidirectional game.
  • Team A (white) attacks horizontally across the playing area, while Team B (green) attacks vertically up and down the playing area.
  • It is a 4v4 possession in the middle, where the aim is to switch the ball between designated target/outside players - here represented by the yellow players (Team C)
  • The yellow outside players can move up and down their side of the square to receive the ball.
  • There is no restriction on touches or passes.
  • The only scoring system in play is if one team can successfully switch the ball between the two target players without any interceptions or tackles from the opposition. This earns the team 1 point
  • After a designated time period (approx. 5 mins), Team A swaps positions with Team C to become the target/outside players. After the second block of work, Team B swaps with Team A and so on. Make sure each Team plays on the outside.
  • At the end of the practice, add up all the points from each round to see which Team has won.

COACHING DETAILS:

BODY SHAPE TO RECEIVE

  • With the added element of defensive pressure, players must continue to scan and receive with open hips e.g., with their feet either at 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock.
  • Teammate need to communicate to each other giving clear details to turn out to exploit space or to play back.
  • Teammates need to provide good passing angles and options for their teammate who has the ball.

DECISION-MAKING

  • Since the players are aiming to switch the ball within a team scenario, can they (i) beat their immediate defender 1v1 and switch the ball themselves OR (ii) combine with clever passes before switching play OR (iii) spot gaps in the defensive line and playing a pass between the lines (e.g., killer pass) to switch play.
  • Provide coaching points on when players should turn upon receiving  - e.g., when there is no pressure from behind; when players should attempt to take on their opponent in a 1v1 duel; when an early pass might be the best option etc. The key here is to provide options & suggestions to players, helping them to become more intelligent players, not robots!

MOVEMENT OFF THE BALL

  • Encourage teams to maintain good width at times. This is to provide passing options + pull the opponent out of shape, making it easier to switch play.
  • Challenge players to always be in a position to receive the ball. Can they get into a position to receive within three (3) seconds?
  • Encourage players to constantly interchange their positions. This will force their opponents to stay on high alert.

DEFENDING/PRESSING

  • Encourage whichever team is defending to work hard (tempo & intensity!) and always put pressure on the attacking team. This is called 'Pressing'. This will make it more difficult for the attacking team to score as they aim to switch play.

Playing Through The Thirds (30 mins)

OVERVIEW:

  • Setup a 45 x 30 pitch (or whatever size works best for the number of players you have) with either two half-sized goal or 4 mini goals, 2 at each end. Place goalkeepers at each end.
  • You will also need to split the pitch into three even thirds.
  • You will need two teams of even size 4v4 or 5v5 or 6v6. If you have an odd number, have one player who functions as 'the joker' i.e., who always plays for the team in possession of the ball.
  • Players from each team are to spend out evenly between the three thirds e.g., 1 or 2 players in the defensive third, 1 or 2 players in the middle-third and 1 or 2 players in the attacking/final third.
GAME RULES/CONSTRAINTS:
  • The game starts with one of the goalkeepers (see video).
  • Each team must either pass or dribble from one third into the next.
  • All players are locked into their third UNLESS they manage to dribble or pass into the next third, thereby creating an overload in the next third.
  • If a goal is scored, play resumes with that teams goalkeeper (see video). Once a goal has been scored, all players must return to original playing third.
COACHING DETAILS:
  • Offer the same coaching points from the opening two practices. This time, try to coach on-the-run without stopping play.
  • In this final conditioned game, you as the coach is looking to see if players are starting to implement what you have been working on in the session (e.g., during the Possession Box Warm-up & Multidirectional Possession Game). Can you see a change in players' behaviour?
PROGRESSIONS:
  • Players can move anywhere on the pitch, however, they must pass or dribble from one third into the next to be able to progress towards goal.
