Possession Play - SI 2 - Creating Attacking Overload (10 mins)

Area: two 15 x 25 grids, offset (yellow cones shown), Zones 1-3 15 x 7, zone 2 15 x 11; two centre flat markers centre of Zone 1 (red cones shown)

Players: 8 -20 player, replicate for larger number (shown) two groups by bib colour

Explanation: Both grids working simeltaneously (if only using one grid rotate attackers, defenders).  Attacker at each end (A-E); 1 (B) v 1 in Zone 1; 2 (C's) v 1 in Zone 2; 1 (D) v 1 in Zone 3.  Phase 1 - Defenders are passive.  Play starts with Player A passing into the forward movement of Player B in Zone 1, Player B takes a touch away from pressure to set up a pass in either of Player C's in Zone 1.  Players C's combine to get a pass or dribble into Zone 3 to combine with Player D to get the ball to Player E.  Once the ball reaches Player E they pass ball back to the Player A position and reset.  Player A moves to Position B, Player B shuffles to vacant Position C, C to D, D to E, E moves to defender queue in the opposite grid, fenders move forward a position. Defenders move forward one zone, defender in zone 1moves to opposite Player A position.

Phase -2 Defenders are active. Same sequence, add small goal in front of Zone 1.  Player B can bounce in Player A to create overload in Zone 1.  If defenders win the ball they try to score in the small goal as quickly as possible.

Coaching Points: sharp movement by Players C to create options for Player B, Player D movment to create space/overload for player C to decide to pass or dribble, first touch with back foot, opening stance to be able to receive and pass on and guard ball from defender, firm long passes, short pass timing/weight/accuracy.
