Session Design - Defending The Lines
3-5-2 (Out of Possession - Blue) vs 4-4-2 Diamond (In Possession - Reds)
Blue Team - 1 Defensive midfielder, 2 Centre-Midfielders & 2 Strikers
Red Team - 1 Goalkeeper, 2 Centre Backs, 1 Defensive Midfielder, 2 Centre Midfielders & 1 Attacking Midfielder
5v7 Game - Goal Kick Situation
Blue Team Objective: To defend the forward pass into midfield and stop them progressing forwards, if they win the ball back then score in the Blue Team big goal
Red Team Objective: To play out from the back forwards into midfield and then score in the goal
Block 1: 4 minutes with 1 min intervention (Ross)
Block 2: 4 minutes with 1 min intervention (Ross)
Block 3: 4 minutes with 1 min intervention (Tom)
Block 4: 4 minutes with 1 min intervention (Tom)
Problem 1: The in possession red team utilise a 4v2 (Red #1, #5, #6 & #4 vs Blue #9 & #11)
Solution 1: The Blue nearside striker will press the player on the ball while the far side striker will shadow mark & block the pass into the opposition #4
Problem 2: The #9 & #11 blue players keep getting beat in the press and one of the red CBs or DM keep bringing the ball into midfield
Solution 2: Can nearest Blue CM put pressure on the ball while the other 2 midfielders take up a position of cover

Solution #1: the near side striker will press the CB on the ball and show wide with their body shape while the far side striker will shadow mark & cut the pass into red #4. If the ball is switched to the opposite CB the roles will switch. This will stop the Red progressing forwards through their #4 and be limited to passing to another CM
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Problem #2: One of the Red CBs or DM keeps dribbling the ball into midfield and where the striker has already been beaten and there is now 4v3 overload
Problem #2: When this happens the nearest blue CM needs to press the player on the ball so they can't progress and delay them so the Strikers have time to recover. Simultaneously, the other blue midfielders need to take up a position to cover between the red midfielders so that they can be ready to react to the next pass forwards
