Warm Up
7:15 - 7:30 PM
Topic: Fun game emphasizing recognition of space and explosiveness
Set Up: 2 groups of 20-30 players
In each half set up 4 corner squares
Separate group into attacking (runners) and defending (chasers), with defending players holding pennies.
1. Without Ball - Runners look to move from square to square for a point, all games need to be a competition. Chasers are not allowed to enter the corner squares. If Chaser tags a runner, Chaser drops penny and becomes a runner. Tagged runner must pick up penny before becoming a Chaser.
- Play a 2 minute game with no coaching, want to allow players opportunity to solve problems before we give . Players ending as Chasers have 3 push ups. Player with the most points at the end of 2 minutes is the winner. All other players have 3 push ups. Repeat a 2 minute game, now with coaches providing feedback during the game.
Coaching Points:
- Recognition of space from players. Once the space is open, how do they explode to get into it.
- Change of direction and speed to beat defenders (Chasers) to get into attacking areas. 1v1 attacking
Progression:
- Add a ball for every attacking player. Chaser must now win the ball to become the runner.
- Technique of keeping the ball close to body while dribbling at speed. Ankle locked, toe pointed down, tight touches when under pressure, exploding with larger touches when space opens up.

Group 1: Technical Skills
18 Minute Stations
Coach Keegan
Topic: 1v1 to beat defenders, technical development
Players: 12-16 Players
Equipment: every player has a ball, 16 Cones
Set Up: Split into 2 groups of 6 - 8 players
1. Players dribble to the inside cone, before reaching cone, perform any turn, then dribble back (1 minute)
2. Players perform specific turn demonstrated by the coach (example: Cruyff, Drag back, outside foot chop, stepover) (4 minutes, every minute change the type of turn)
3. Players now perform scissor with left foot, take ball with outside of right and move to the line to the right. See example 1 in diagram. After 1 minute, switch to scissor with right foot, taking the ball with the outside of the left.
Coaching Points:
- Change of speed after change of direction. Important to have both
- keeping the ball under control, using the proper surface of the foot to dribbling/turn
Progression: Final 10 Minutes, competitive game
- In the same 2 groups, now add 2 defenders, with a ball and holding a penny inside square. Attacking players with ball, outside of the large square. See example 2. Attacking players look to dribble with speed into the small square into the middle, and then back out without being tagged by the defenders. If successful, 1 point. If Defender tags attacking player, defender drops penny and becomes an attacker. Make it a competition, but fun.
Rules: Defenders may not leave the big square, may not enter smaller square, these are safe zones for attackers.
Coaching Points:
- How do attackers recognize space when it opens up and explode into it, keeping tight control of the ball.
- How do you beat the defender without letting them get close enough to touch you.

Group 2:
18 Minute Station
Topic: 1v1 progressing to 2v1 with counter goals
Coach Tyler
Players: 12-16 Players
Equipment: 2 small goals, 4 cones, pennies, and 8-10 balls
1. 1v1 to goal. Defender plays ball to attacker, goes 1v1 to large goal. Make sure we are also evaluating goalkeepers. Game ends when attacking player shoots/scores, or defender wins the ball and counters to small goal. Ball hits the wall, the round is over.
Play 3 minute game then rotate attacking and defending teams. Keep score, make a competition but fun.
Coaching Points:
- Attacking players attacking at speed, beating defender with a good change of pace/direction.
- Once past the defender, how do we position our body to get defender on our back, shape for the shot.
- finishing with composure, finding corners, not just blasting the ball at goal.
- solving problems without using the walls
Progression: Add a secondary attacking line. 2v1
Coaching Points:
- 2v1 committing defender by dribbling at their front foot, forcing them to make a decision. If defender doesn't commit, get to goal. If defender commits, play ball to teammate.

Group 3:
18 Minute Station
Topic: Small Sided Games
Coach Meg
Players: 12-16 Players
Equipment: 4 small goals, cones, 3 sets of colored pennies plus neutrals if necessary, and 8-10 balls
1. Separate into 4 equal teams (use neutrals if necessary)
5 minute games, round robin, each team playing each other once.
3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for loss.
Make it a competition but fun.
Coaching points:
- Try not to stop games if possible, but direct in the flow of the game
- What shape should we be in, how do we create passing lanes?
- Decision on the ball, when to dribble, when to pass, when to shoot?
Focus of this group will be to see the players in game environment, how do they solve problems.
