Technical Activation: Dutch Circles (15 mins)

Exercise 1: Dutch Circles – Technical Activation

Setup:

  • Two Dutch Circles:
    • Blue players (outside) are passers.
    • Red players (inside) are movers, working on quick passing and movement.
  • Each blue player has a ball and looks to connect with an inside red player.
  • Red players receive a pass, return it, and immediately move to find another blue player with a ball.

Progressions:

  • Basic Activation – Red receives a pass from a blue, returns it, and quickly moves to another blue.
  • Combination Play – Red now combines with another red inside (e.g., one-two pass) before passing back to a blue.
  • Limited Touch – Restrict reds to two-touch play to increase tempo and efficiency.
  • Scanning & Awareness – Reds must check their shoulders before receiving to recognize space and passing options faster.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Quick Movement – Always be on the move to support and provide a passing option.
  • Intensity – Play at high speed to simulate game-like conditions.
  • Pass Quality – Passes should be crisp, accurate, and played on the ground for smooth execution.
  • Body Positioning – Adjust before receiving to keep the ball moving efficiently.

Exercise 2: Three-Color Rondo

Setup:

  • Three teams (three colors) playing in a possession-based rondo.
  • One team (defenders) presses while the other two teams maintain possession.
  • Grid size: Adjust based on numbers

Activity Structure:

Round 1: Fixed Defenders (2 min active press)

  • One team starts as defenders for the full 2-minute period.
  • Objective for defenders:
    • Press, cover, and balance effectively.
    • Recognize the right moment to press while maintaining defensive structure.
    • Ensure compactness and minimal distance between defenders.
  • Objective for possession teams:
    • Keep the ball moving quickly.
    • Exploit gaps in the pressing team.
    • Transition play to different areas to disorganize defenders.

Round 2: Transitioning Defenders (Press Upon Losing Possession)

  • The team that loses possession immediately becomes the new defensive team.
  • Defensive focus:
    • Immediate pressing upon losing possession.
    • If the ball is too far to win immediately, stay compact and recognize pressing triggers before stepping.
    • Pressing must be collective, not isolated—players must react together.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Defensive Shape: Always maintain a compact unit, avoid overcommitting.
  • Pressing Decisions: Recognize when to press aggressively and when to delay.
  • Collective Reaction: If one player steps to press, teammates must adjust their cover and balance accordingly.
  • Immediate Transition Mentality: Shift from attacking to defensive mindset instantly upon loss of possession.
  • Communication: Defenders must constantly talk to organize pressing cues.

  • Provide options to play forward by creating central overloads or stretching the defense wide.
  • Make runs in behind to force defenders to adjust and create space.

Defending Principles (Blue Team - Out of Possession)

  • Defensive compactness: Make team compact vertically and horizontally to minimize gaps.
  • Shift as a unit: Move together to force play into predictable areas.
  • Deny passing lanes: Cut off central options and force play wide.
  • Immediate transition: When winning possession, secure the ball and look for counterattack opportunities.
