Description

Session Objective: To improve first touch away from the opponent.

Technical Outcomes: 

  • Scanning to see where opponents are and identify free space 

  • Positioning so you can receive facing forwards 
  • Take first touch away from body to allow you to execute next action 
  • Utilise different surfaces of your foot to receive the ball 

Tactical Outcomes: 

  • Penetration 

  • Off the ball movement
  • Width and depth 
  • Shape (Left, right, middle and far)
  • Creative combinations to eliminate opponent

Warm Up (5 mins)

Set Up:

 

Players: 12

Players to set up 6-8 metres away from each other. Gate size is 1 metre.

 

Explanation:

-Players will work in pairs 

1. Player A passes the ball to player B. Player B receives the ball with the inside of their foot, past the cone and pass the ball back to player A through the gate. The next time player B receives the ball he must take his first touch with his left foot.  

2. Player is to run through the gate (about 5 steps) and take first touch forward and then pass the ball back

3. Player is to receive the ball with the inside of his foot across his body

 

-Players are to receive 20 passes (10 with each foot) and then swap roles.

Skill Training Part 1 (15 mins)

Set Up:

 

Players: 12 (4v2)

Grid Size: 2 grids 12m x 12m

Swap defenders every 45 seconds - 1 minute

 

Explanation: In the area shown in the diagram, 4 attackers play against 2 defenders. The attacking team scores by playing 5 passes. 

 

Team task: To maintain possession for as long as possible

 

Player Actions: 

  • Can you take your first touch away from the opponent

  • Can you position yourself where you can see the whole field
  • Can you play on two touches
  • Can you see your opponent, see the ball and your next pass
  • Can you look to play to the opposite side

Player Cues: 

  • Can you scan ahead to see where the opponents are to allow you to take your first touch away from pressure.
  • Whenever possible, can you position yourself to see the whole field and play as quickly as possible. 
  • As the ball moves around, can you reposition yourself at all times to see the line of the ball.

Variation/Progression: 

  • Reduce grid size
  • Add two touch limit

Skill Training Part 2 (25 mins)

Set Up:

 

Players: 12

Grid Size: 25m x 25m

 

Explanation: In the area shown in the diagram, 2 teams of 6 players play with two players from each team standing in the gates across from each other. The attacking team scores by releasing one of the players standing between the gates, this player must then take a touch inside the grid and swap places with the player who passed them the ball. Once the team releases one player they must then try to release the player in the opposite gate.  

 

Team task: To release players in the gates and maintain possession for as long as possible

 

Player Actions: 

  • Can you take your first touch away from the opponent

  • Can you position yourself where you can see the whole field
  • Can you position yourself to receive facing forward and play forward on your second touch
  • Can you see your opponent, see the ball and your next pass

Player Cues: 

  • Can you scan ahead to see where the opponents are to allow you to take your first touch away from pressure.
  • Whenever possible, can you position yourself to see the whole field and play as quickly as possible.

Skill Game (20 mins)

Set Up:

 

Players: 12

Grid Size: 20m x 25m with a 7m scoring zone at each end 

 

Explanation: 6v6 with goals at each end. All players have compulsory TWO touches unless they are shooting at goal inside the scoring zone. Players must be inside the scoring zone to score. Only 3 players can be on one side of the pitch at all times when in possession of the ball. This does not include the defending team.
