Session Objective
This session is focused on (1) the team winning the ball back and attacking quickly; (2) the team counter pressing after a loss of possession; and (3) the team in possession maintaining a good rest defense shape when building in the opposition's half. Although there is no focus of which singular third of the field we are working in, we are focusing on the back 4 rest defense shape and the midfield three reacting to loss of possession.
Review
Would suggest setting up practice #3 to correspond to practice #2. Its not a lot to change but simply lifting up cones and adjust teams would help move along quicker

Org.:
- Width of 18 x 40-50L, 2-3 teams with neutral players and GKs (4-6 x 4-5 minutes)
Instructions:
- Blue team starts with the ball in possession and looks to build to the 3 midfielders ahead of them, then try to get a shot off on goal using their forward. If the red team intercepts the ball, they look to play the ball out to the wide neutral player/target forward (no defense allowed; neutral player 3 touches without defense) and attack either the mini-goal or big-goal. After first round of playing, teams may send a player to pressure
Prog./Reg.:
- Full width; one defender is allowed to step out to defend the neutral players; defending team can send one player up to pressure (2 points for goals)
- Allow a midfielder to drop in to receive the ball, forward can join in the pressure of back four (more game-like)
Coach Point/Ques.:
- Move the ball quickly to create openings to play forward
- When the ball is lost, can we react quickly to pressure and win the ball back?
- Can we prevent forward passes with our positioning when rest defending?
Non focus
- Move as a collective unit to prevent forward passes
- When we win the ball back, can we play forward quickly and direct to score
- Pressure, cover, protect (central midfielders)
AOI:
- Reacting quickly to loss of possession
- Keeping a good shape when in possession
- Counter attacking quickly
Principles of Play:
- Counter press quickly when losing possession "quick snap"
- Take care of the ball
- Compact/concentration
- Counter attack quickly out of pressure
Adapt./Var.:
- 4 zone set up with three goals on each end
- No goalkeepers: just 4 goals in wide or central areas
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Org.:
- Two teams with goals, 2 thirds of field with width of 18; (4 x 6 minutes)
Instructions
- Blue start with the ball in attacking half of the field (2) and look to create a goal scoring chance using neutral wingers (3 touches only, no pressure). Red team is looking to defend and counter attack to goal using the neutral players as well (players in half two are restricted to this area of the field). 3 red players may pressure in opposition half and can recover back when beaten.
Prog./Reg.:
- Add players to red (7/11 half 1; 2/3 half 2)
Coach Points/Ques.:
- Move the ball quickly to disorganize and attack
- React quickly after a loss of possession; nearest man pressure
- Good rest defense shape
Non-focus
- Can we counter attack to goal quickly
- Keep compact and force play wide
- Pressure, cover, balance/protect
AOI
- Winning the ball and attacking quickly (red)
Principles of Play
- Quick reaction to possession loss, closest man pressures (midfield trio)
- If we cannot win, drop into defensive shape (midfield trio)
- Pressure, cover, protect
- Counter attack quickly (red team)
Adapt/Var.:
- Neutrals on the end line to play off of for red during build up

1v1 to 2v2: Pressure with Counter Attack (15 mins)
Org.:
- 2 fields of 2 teams, 18x20L/18x25L; (4 x 2.5 minute rounds)
Instructions:
- Red starts with a pass to blue, who tries to beat the defender 1v1 on the dribble. If red intercepts the ball, they can play neutrals on the outside to counter quickly to the opposite goal (neutrals cannot score). Play is dead on ball out of bounds or goal. Switch wide neutrals every round
Prog./Reg.:
- 2v2 game; neutrals can score
Coach Points/Ques.:
- Attack the defender at speed
- If possession is lost, can we counter pressure quickly and prevent forward progress
- Can 2nd defender be in a good position to maintain possession and attack, but close enough to pressure if ball is lost?
Non-focus
- Pressing technique of defender
- Counter attack quickly
AOI:
- Reacting to loss of possession quickly
- Counter attacking with speed and efficiency
- Making quick decisions
- Preventing penetrating passes
Principles of Play:
- Look for triggers to pressure
- Look forward after winning the ball
- Play out of pressure to attack
Adapt./Var.:
- End-line dribbling instead of goals
