Organization: 10*15 yard grids (multiple). Four-six players per grid (two on each end line). Supply of balls available with a server along the side to ensure continuous flow.
Activity: 1v1 defending. Server plays the ball to the attacking player, who enters the area trying to score by dribbling past the end line. Start with passive defending and progress to active defending where the ball can be won and defenders can counter by dribbling across the attacker's end line.
Progression: 2v2 - extend the grid to 20*20 and add an offside line. Recovery defender starts behind the halfway line.
Coaching Points:
Quick early pressure (delay).
Close down quickly, but slow down to ensure a proper distance.
Body position - side on, showing attacker away from goal (into a space).
Show restraint.
Tackle the ball when an opportunity presents itself - cues.
Angle/Distance of cover.

Organization: Two thirds of the field, using only slightly less than the width of the 18 yard box ; One large goal; one end zone approx. 8-10 yards deep. Supply of balls on the opposite side of the center circle with a server. Three poles identifying two gates at the top of the 18-yard box. Red team (focus group) lines up with GK and two central midfielders. Blue team (non focus group) lines up with two midfielders (6,8), 1 CB and two central forwards (9,10) - one in each open gate. The CB is in more of a supportive role. Both teams align with a 4-4-2 formation.
Activity: Play starts with the Red team feigning losing possession of the ball to the Blue team #5 in the end zone. The Blue team player will quickly attack the large goal by playing into one of their CFs via either of the open gates. The Red midfielder who lost the ball leaves the field. Blue attack 4v2 to goal. If Red wins the ball it can score by dribbling or passing into the end zone. Blue team will try and score on the large goal.
Progressions:
Shift the Red focus from blocking passing channels to actively trying to win the ball early.
Coaching Points:
1. Movement - pressure and cover (delay, deflect and dictate).
2. Delay the attack.
3. Communication.
4. Protect the middle - no penetration. Screen for the opposition 9. Depth in defending.
5. Stay connected and compact.

Activity:

Progression:
