PRESSING FROM THE FRONT

PRESSING GOAL KICKS - OPPOSITION SET UP AT GK and OUR TEAM SHAPE

Opposition play 3-5-2 but at goal kicks set up as s per the diagram in a 1-2-4-2-2 formation. The only wide players are the two wide midfielders (here #2 & #3). We basically set up in a 1-2-2-4-2 formation.

RECOVERING TO BLOCK

THE BLOCK

If the ball breaks the line of our wide pressing player and is played down the line we revert to a defensive block with the dark side CB (here #4) recovering in between our wide backs, and the other CB tracks any forward supporting run by the player they are marking.

OPPOSITION SET UP AT GK and OUR TEAM SHAPE

Opposition play 3-5-2 but at goal kicks set up as per the diagram in a 1-2-4-2-2 formation.  The only wide players are the two wide midfielders (here #2 & #3).  We basically set up in a 1-2-2-4-2 formation.

FUNCTION

  • Possibly 13-15 players available - coaches to make up more numbers, ideally 17.  If only 15 take out the two highlighted.
  • Press formation  2-4-2  v opposition 1-2-4-2.
  • Play starts with the GK taking short goal kick to either CB inside their goal box which triggers the attacking team press
  • Defending team looking to score by playing into one of the small goals either side of the centre circle of by dribbling into or passing into a team mate in the centre circle on their own side of halfway.
  • Attacking side looking to win possession and score in the large goal.
Progression
  • GK can now also play centrally to start the attack.
  • Attacking team when they win the back in the attacking third MUST score within 3 passes of 15 seconds.
COACHING DETAIL

The Press:
  • Firstly, to get the right shape for our press one of our ACM's #10 and both our CB #5 and #4 both step forward (#10 to the attacking line and #5 and #4 to the midfield) - as per diagram.
  • We encourage the opposition to play short by our #9 10 sitting off the box slightly.
  • If ball played short to CB (here their #4), our #9 presses and directs play wide.
  • While our #9 presses the ball our #11 blocks the passing channel to the wide space behind them.
  • Our #10 positions to stop any direct switch of play to their #5. If they play back to GK our #10's role is to stop the switch and force play back the way it came or centrally.
  • If a pass is played to their #2 our #11 needs to be touch tight to either challenge to win the ball or to stop them playing forward.
  • Our central players  #4, 5, 6 & 8 must man mark tightly so they can win the ball or stop their opposite playing forwarded if they receive a pass
  • Once the ball is played to one side by the GK our #7 on the dark side drops centrally to support the midfield and offer defensive support.
  • If the ball breaks the line of our wide pressing player and is played down the line we revert to a defensive block with the dark side CB (here #4) recovering in between our wide backs, and the other CB tracks any supporting run by the player they are marking.
