Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition) 1 hour training session. u13's district girls.
Shooting and pitch size area will be 40 x 30 yds.
10 balls
12 large cones 8 white flat discs
14 bibs
Balls to be kept in a central box and recycled to the outside of the marked pitch after shooting and dribbled back to the player line, maximising ball at the feet.
The area will be split into two with discs at each end 12 yds out from each goal to create the shooting line during the drills and then the shooting area for the SSG.
On arrival hand out 14 bibs = 7 yellow, 7 Pink to pre-chosen teams to make balanced.
Offer a quick demonstration to all players on the drill. After 5 minutes of shooting practice to look at shooting technique offer any advice/guidance on mechanics before increasing the drill to add some closing down to make the scenario more realistic. The 2 players involved in the pass and shot remain behind the goal and once the passer has touched the ball they engage from the goal line to close down the player taking the shot. This should aim to increase the technique around accuracy of pass to the striker and a first time shot. Each pair then rotate and continue to 'conveyer belt' to ensure maximum cycles are complete.
The session is designed for 12 outfield players and 2 Goal Keepers.
Shooting Mechanics.
1. Identify Target, 2. Body position in relation to the ball, 3. Arms out for balance, 4. Non-kicking foot beside the ball, 5. Head over the ball, 6. Select surface and strike eg: laces, 7. Follow through towards target.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
This skill practice is the transition and progression from the technical drill. Collect up the 2 marker cones and the 4 ball area cones to reveal the 40 x 30 area with only flat discs left to mark out the 12 yard box.
This skill practice is a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 exercise with the emphasis on creating a shooting opportunity for their team outside the 12 yard area initially.
If this works well the task can be progressed to trying to shoot inside the box.
If we need to regress the skill practice I will introduce 1v1 then 2v1 to allow the extra player to create an advantage for the attacking team to try to create a shot.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
The challenge is transitional switching from attacking to defending if they lose the ball and vice versa.
Points awarded for goals x 2, on target 1 point.
Target - to achieve as much accurate shots on target which will assist in working the goal keepers.
Exercise to take between 8 and 10 minutes.
Then drinks break

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
30 minute small-sided game to look at transitions from attack to defence and the quality/accuracy of shooting.
If the sides seem a little unbalanced we can quickly swap a player to even things up and keep the session healthy and competitive (not becoming demoralising for the other team if the balance isn't quite right).
15 minutes then swap ends and quick drink if needed.
Offer any coaching guidance player specific or group and any rehearsals to take into the last aspect of the session.
Removing the flat discs so now replicating a real match environment.
Re-introduce the scoring system of 1 point for a shot on target and 2 points for a goal.
Aim is to see progression in accuracy of shooting and increasing the quality of technique and decision making aroung the shooting element.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Must shoot inside the 12 yard markers. Defenders cannot enter the shooting box.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
As this is a carousel drill the coaches can move between the two sets of players to discuss and undertake walk along player instruction or stop a set of players and offer some feedback/reinforcement of technique/mechanics as felt necessary. Continue this for a further 5 minutes or until coaches are happy with the progression. If players are struggling with the closing down and not getting shots away then we can regress through asking the players at the goal line to take a step or 2 back thus allowing greater distance to close down and more time to shoot.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenge is to see if the pass can be accurate to set up a first time shot.
Conditions for this drill are:
the players closing the ball down must be behind the goal line and must wait until the passing player has touched the ball.
Shots must be taken outside the 12 yard marked disc area.
