Organisation

Defend the Circle (25 mins)

Organisation

  • 5v4 with an attacking overload
  • The white team are trying to receive the ball in the circle, the blue team are trying to keep them out of the circle
  • White players can only be in the circle for a maximum of 3 seconds
  • Blue team can not enter the circle
Coaching Points
  • When pressuring the ball -  fast, slow, low, show
  • Close the gaps to not allow passes through
  • Check shoulders and surroundings for players making runs - DO NOT just stare at the ball
Progressions
  • Attackers can now play through the middle to the other side as well as receiving in the circle - defenders now have to be compact at all times not just when players are making runs

Attack vs Defence with Defensive Zones (30 mins)

Organisation

  • The field is split into the 5 defensive zones and the 'red zone'. These are just guidelines, but add restrictions if defenders need extra guidance
  • Attackers start with the ball and attack the goal
  • Defenders defend and try to play to the pug goals if they win it
Coaching Points

  • Defenders should be compact and shift to the 3 zones closest to the one that the ball is in. They can leave the furthest zone (furthest two if the ball is an at an extreme) open, but must shift quickly if the ball shifts across
  • They should always defend outside of the red zone, and only drop into it if the ball finds its way in. As soon as the ball exits, players must push out
  • Goalkeeper should be vocal and help command the defenders

Progression

  • Ball starts wherever it goes out like a regular FIFA rules, defenders set shape according to this
