Description

Build From The Back
This sessions is designed around building from the back and how we can use patterns to transition the ball upfield, without resorting to big kick and chase. The early part of the session will focus on technical skills, as to implement a BOTB style of play, all players must be comfortable passing, moving and receiving the ball. The later part of the session will move into the tactical pattern play to get players to understand their role within the system and the patterns we can use to transition the ball upfield

Build From The Back - Pattern Play (25 mins)

Build From The Back (BFTB) - Pattern one.

We will practice our build out patterns and work on how we can transition from Goal Kicks and get the ball upfield. Focus is on taking space, inviting pressure and moving the ball quickly to wide areas and getting the ball in behind the back line.

Setup

  • Players should be put into relevant positions on the pitch in a team of 7. Spare players will work as the defending team and should be rotated.
  • It may be beneficial to get players in the starting line-up for the next game

Routine

  • Goalkeeper starts by playing a simple ball from the GK to the RCB. Kick should be taken from around the penalty spot, CB should be inline not edge of box
  • RCB then dribbles forward taking his space
  • RM drops deep to give a good passing angle when the RCB is engaged by the press. CM stays central to give option. LCB and LM shuffle over to cover if ball is lost
  • RCB plays the ball to RM, who turns and takes his space running down the wing. ST pushes forward looking for the run in behind. LM stays wide to stretch the pitch. CM stays central to give option and provide cover. CBs and GK move forward keeping the high line
  • When the RM is engaged he has 3 options. Pass in behind is preferred option is available. Switch to LM is an option if open and passing lane is clear. Coming back to CM who can then pivot the switch to LM also an option.
  • Ball is played through to the ST who will look to quickly break and get a shot at goal. LM runs forward to provide support. RM advances. CM takes an advanced positon to recycle the ball if it comes out. CBs push to halfway. GK pushes up outside of box to Sweep up any long balls
Coaching Points
  • Encourage players to shuffle over when ball is played wide but do not crowd the space
  • CB should move the ball forward and not stand static. Take the space when given
  • CM should always try and find space to receive a pass should the forward or wide pass be blocked
  • Forward must hold his line high and not drop too deep or space will be crowded
  • CB and GK encouraged to follow the play and push forward to a high line when ball is in the final third
