Learning intentions:

Barnsley FC (Reds in the Community, shadow scholarship squad 2nd/3rd team)

Sport science led warm up: 20 minutes

Technical practice: 10 minutes

General principles based session: 24 minutes

Individualised session within a small sided game: 20 minutes

Technical practice

Key Factors

  • Unopposed technical practice
  • Player encouraged to use 2 touches
  • Body shape, side on to see both end men.
  • Detail on pass: ball speed, direction, weight and smoothness.
  • Receiving skills: body shape, angle to receive, movement away from the cone, have a picture.
  • Good first touch, where?

Organisation

  • 7 players
  • 30 x 20 yards 
  • Players on the outside to play to players back foot and play the ball to the opposite side, then make a small movement to the other side of the cone. 
  • Both central players working at once. 
  • 4 x 90 seconds, with 1 minute rest. (10 minutes)

General switching play

Key Factors

  • Defend the grid with fluidity, maintain width & depth in-possession
  • Play through, round or over.
  • Build on technical detail from the technical practice
  • Aim: switch the play to a different corner 

Organisation

  • 3 teams of 2, 3 2v2 +2 + floater 
  • 20 x 15 yards
  • 6 x 2 minutes, 2 minutes rest (24 minutes total)
  • Possession based session, goal scored by playing into a different corner.

  • Coaching process (if required, must dip in and out)
  • Block 1/2/3: create width and depth in possession of the ball, maximum 2 players on the possession per quarter, including floater. 
Block 4/5/6 (Progression): When in possession of the ball the yellow that receives the ball can step in to create the extra overload.

What if's: players don't press the ball? 5 passes can also be classed as a goal

Possession keeps breaking down (Regression)?Lock players into each zone allowing yellows to create an overload of 2v1 per quarter.

  • Play through or round.
  • Occupy 3 of 4 zones of the area in possesison.
  • 3v3 + 1, 4 goal game
  • Move the ball quickly with purpose, limited touches.

    Individual: Focus is on the central midfielder.

  • Body shape open to switch the play, play aware from pressure.
  • Receive the ball on back foot.
  • Scan and check shoulder.

Organisation

  • 4 x 3 minutes (2 minutes rest) 20 minutes total
  • 40 x 30
  • Focus on the individual, reds and blues to be managed.
  • 3v3  format

  • Block 1: CM to recevie the ball before the team scores. 

    Block 2: CM to not drop deeper than back 2
