1. Passing and movements WU practice

SET UP:

> Passing lines and movements. Dynamic movement/stretching comes in channels after completing pass.

1. Pass straight to opposite side, perform movement around pole (cone) then complete dynamic movement/stretch (x2 of each dynamic stretch, core big muscle groups). Side step opposite player at dynamic middle gate.

2. Pass straight to opposite side, perform quick feet to the back of your group, then perform lateral dynamic movment/stretch to group to your right or left.

3. Pass straight to opposite side, perform a diagonal sprint, change of pace to diagonal group. We are picking the intensity up here. Players can also call, show hands for pass to treat it like a give and go in the game. Player opposite to pass straight though (skip this step to avoid confusion).

4. Pass diagonal (players need to get head up so balls don't collide, communication is key), perform a straight sprint or skip out into channel to perform quick feet (SAQ) variations. Tempo is getting close to match pace now.

KEY POINTS:

> Focus on your first touch and pass completion before movement.

> Coach to demonstrate and familiarise squad players with dynamic movements and stretching in trainings leading up to the season.

> Encourage players to communicate and make practice loud, get a 'buzz' going before the game, let the other team know that you are 'fired' up.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

> Set players a challenge to keep balls in play for 10 passes to finish set. Also change the type of pass or movement on coaches call to keep players minds sharp.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..

1. Positional passing patterns

SET UP:

> Positional passing pattern, follow logical order for passing forward and switching play.

> Can we use football terminology and player numbers for positions.

> Have area set up or specific coloured cones ready from Passing patterns area previous.

KEY POINTS:

> Ball speed and running speed to increase as we get warm.

> Get the ball zipping in.

> Player movement off cone before receiving the pass.

> Body shape to receive, 2 touch or set body for 1 touch pass.

> Players to arc run and ask for the ball to be played in front when switching play.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

> Change direction of passing pattern.

> Can we add an extra pass where the pole is on session plan.

> Also added passing combination (highighted- shaded area). Realistic for when midfielder is under pressure, play the way your facing to play out.

> Can #8/11 and #7/11 open up to create a wider passing angle/line (shaded area 2)

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..

2. Classic passing block

SET UP:

> Classic pattern passing block <

1. Pass in clockwise and then anti clockwise direction. Basic passing off two touch.

> Can we open up off player on cone, bit of body contact with inside player. Push off the receive with the back foot. Play off two feet when possible. Think about different first touches available, ready for our game.

2. Bounce pass option around cone/player. Come towards the ball, receive 1 touch lay off (2 touch max), then spin to receive the return pass 'around the corner'.

> Communicate and link up, make the passes clean.

3. Similar to no.2. Can we come to the ball and offer a bounce pass option. The next pass is then diagonal across the the next group. We continue on in this pattern.

> Come to the ball to receive.

> The spin out around cone/player. Timing of our run to meet next lay off/set.

KEY POINTS:

> Quality and appreciation of passing from no.1

> Good weight of pass and timing of forward runs.

> Move before receiving pass, bit of body contact with player on cone. Get used to game realism from the warm up.

> Get a 'buzz' going, 'zipping' passes in and talking it up pre-game.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

> Progressions as shown.

> Can we bib players up ready for possession block. Warm up will flow between exercises.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..

2. Short sharp passing/1st touch > Possession block

SET UP:

> Short sharp passing and 1st touch <

1. Short sharp 2 touch passing- can we explode to the other side after the pass.

2. Come closer, meet the pass, 1 touch, follow on to opposite side.

3. Two touch, make the passing line longer, check out and retreat to the back of your own line.

4. Dribble to half way, play pass, open up your body back towards your group and complete supporting run to your own line. Opposite player to mirror dribble, pass and movement.

> Possession block <

> 3v3, 4v4 or 5v5 depending on squad. 4 outside bounce players (can use your subs)

> Bounce players to have 1 or 2 touch depending on level.

KEY POINTS:

> Short sharp passing and 1st touch <

1. Weight of pass and positive first touch.

2. Change of pace and timing angle of movement.

3. Communication, 'buzz' and 'intensity'.

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

> Possession block <

> Start un-opposed then go for 30sec or 1 min intense blocks. It the team wins the ball back they receive a '1st pass free rule' from the bouncers.

> Add 'Joker' or keeper into the practice for an extra overload.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..
