Warm Up - Races

Warm Up - Races with and without the ball:

Part 1:

Players start on opposite sides of the area at the blue and yellow cones. The first 2 players run into the center, facing each other on their toes. The coach will either call white or red, the 2 players have to react and spring to that cone, first player to reach it wins and gets 1 point.

Part 2:

Using the same format but this time the players must react and sprint around the cone before heading for the finish line to increase their speed of movement and improve agaility.

Progressions:

Add a ball after each turn so that the players do 1 sprint with the ball and 1 sprint without the ball.

Call out 2 colours so that players accelerate, decelerate and change direction quickly. Look to change movements, rather than sprints, side steps, backwards and forwards, add variations.

Activity - Passing & Receiving

Passing & Receiving:

In this drill the players are focusing on passing the ball, moving into space and rotating in position to create 3rd man runs.

The players pass the ball with 1 touch, moving around the triangle or eachother and creating as many short passes in 1 minute as possible making sure to rotate their position as they do so.

If a pass is loose/unsuccessful, players start their 1 minute again and recount their score.

Coaching points:

Body position recieving the ball, passing technique, movement off the ball (supporting player in possession)

Progression:

Opening up the triangle and encouraging 2 touches and shot sharp movements off the cones or taking that touch behind the cone to then set a teammate. Use of both feet and recieving on back foot. Let the ball come across body and play the ball to a team mate in space. Coaching points: Players getting into position to recieve ball on back foot, can they play on half turn and keep the ball moving fluid and keep the tempo high? - All with good quality.

Activity - Non-Contact Rondo

Possession Exercise in Groups of 5 - Non-Contact Rondo:

Players on outside of square aim to pass the ball through the inside of the square to meet a team mate without the defender intercepting the ball.

Outer players to move the ball quickly to 'move' the defender around (in sense of switching play to pull defenders out of position)

Defender will become attacker once they:

A). Win the ball 3x

B). Players on outside make 3x mistakes

C). After a set amount of time

Once a player concedes the ball through the square the attacking team get 1 point. If the ball is not played through the square they do not get a point.

Passing Combinations - Starter

Passing Combinations Starter:

Setup: 3 poles in an 'L' shape around 6-8 yards away from each other. Can be played in groups of 2 with the coach as a bounce player or in groups of 3 with all players getting involved and looking to rotate in positions. Both the coach and Player B have a ball each with this drill to begin with.

Part 1 - The Coach plays a bounce pass into Player A for them to play the ball back with their left foot, Player B then plays the ball into Player A for them to play a bounce pass back with their right foot. Then playing to the coach and back to Player B, repeating the process - enforce playing on the back foot.

Part 2 - Player A scans and shifts to the opposite side of the pole/cone and receives a pass for them to play a bounce pass back. In this instance with Player B.

Player A to stay on central pole/cone for 14 passes, 7 passes from coach, 7 passes from Player B and then switching with another player.

Passing Combinations - Part 1 & 2

Passing Combinations:

Setup: 3 poles in an 'L' shape around 6-8 yards away from each other. Can be played in groups of 2 with the coach as a bounce player or in groups of 3 with all players getting involved and looking to rotate in positions. Both the coach and Player B have a ball each with this drill to begin with.

Part 1 - The ball starts with the coach. The ball is played into Player A who takes a touch around the pole/cone with the ball and plays the ball back to the coach's feet.

Part 2 - Player A then turns after playing the ball back to the coach and receives a pass from Player B who is stood near the 3rd pole/cone. Player B plays a pass into Player A's feet, they take touch around the pole and play the ball back to Player B.

Repeat for 1 minute then change the central player, in this case, Player A.

Coaching Points:

Movement (off the pole/man) to open up an angle for a pass

Scanning and Dropping Deep, getting your head up to see the area around you

Technique - Weight of pass, passing accuracy, first touch

Passing Combinations - Part 3 & 4

Passing Combinations:

Setup: 3 poles in an 'L' shape around 6-8 yards away from each other. Can be played in groups of 2 with the coach as a bounce player or in groups of 3 with all players getting involved and looking to rotate in positions. For Part 3 & 4 there is only 1 ball used.

Part 3 - The ball starts with the Coach. Player A comes short for the ball, the coach plays a pass and Player A plays a bounce pass back to the coach. Player A then drops off, scans and looks to create an angle for a pass, the coach then plays the ball into their feet for them to turn and play into Player B, repeating the sequence with the other player.

Part 4 - Again, the ball starting with the coach. The coach plays into Player A's feet, Playe B then checks off to the left-hand side of the pole/cone. Player A then plays a bounce pass into Player B's feet who then makes overlapping run around the pole/cone for Player A to play back, Player B then plays a diagonal pass to the Coach and follows their run into the central pole/cone.

1 minute of work, if needed take 2 touches, wait for players to get set and really focus on that movment into space before playing a pass

Coaching Points:

Movement (off the pole/man) to open up an angle for a pass

Scanning and Dropping Deep, getting your head up to see the area around you

Technique - Weight of pass, passing accuracy, first touch

Rotations in positions = communication
