Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Passing & Receiving - Building from the Back
Description
Session Objective: To give players the opportunity to practice building out from the back. Players will learn the importance of making wise decision when in and out of possession.
Level: U9-12

Part 1: Target Possession (unopposed) - Engage - 10mins
- This is an unopposed (no tackling) skill practice that helps players: (a) make well-timed off-the-ball runs (mobility) (b) receive the ball on the half turn (c) scan constantly (d) pass with precision and correct power.
Part 2: Target Possession (opposed) - Educate - 20-25mins
- This is an opposed (tackling allow) skill practice that helps players develop good habits that will enable them to build out from the back OR in other words, play through their opponent. This practice can be played as 4v4, 5v5 or 6v6.
Part 3: Retreat OR Press Small-sided Game - Explore - 25-30mins
- This is a small-sided game of 4v4 or 5v5 plus goalkeepers.
- In this small-sided game gives players plenty of opportunity to build out from the back. This is important as stats show that more goals are scored as a direct result of teams playing out from the back/defence.

Target Possession (Opposed) (20 mins)
Overview:
- Keep the same playing area as before (20 x 20), making it larger/smaller depending on numbers.
- The practice now becomes an opposed practice with one ball and two teams playing against each other.
- The objective remains the same: teams must get the ball from one side to the other - from Target Player to Target Player. Teams receive 1 point for achieving this objective. The Team with the most point after the practice wins!
- The defending team must try to win the ball back and then play between their Target Players.
- Target Players are not allowed to be tackled. Only their passes are allowed to be intercepted.
- Play for 5 mins rounds. Rotate the Target Players after each round.
Work to Rest Ratio:
- 5 mins work / 1-2min rest/drink break.
Coaching Details: Same coaching points & details as before, with the following additions based on The Principles of Play:
Attacking Principles:
- Penetration: Can attacking teams look to penetrate quickly but patiently by shifting the ball with speed from Target Player to Target Player.
- Mobility: Can attacking teams use clever movement/manoeuvres on and off the ball to pull the opposition out of shape, making them easier to pass/dribble through.
- Creativity: Can attacking teams increase success by using skills or tricks in 1 v 1 situations e.g., step-overs, change of speed when dribbling, etc.
- Compactness: can defending players in the middle stay closer together to avoid being played through.
- Pressure/Pressing: can defending players work as a unit, seeking to trap and then steal the ball off the attacking team.
- Patience: can defending players stay patient when looking to steal the ball from the attacking team. Yes 'Press' to win the ball when the opportunity is there, but don't panic or take miscalculated risks.
Progressions:
- If a pass is played into the Target Player, they can now choose to either pass the ball back into the middle area (like normal) OR dribble in (new element). If they choose to dribble in, then an inside player from their team must take their place.
- Target Players can now be tackled.

Retreat OR Press SSG (30 mins)
Overview:
- Set-up a playing area approx. 40 x 25 with two goal either end.
- Place a row of cones/discs down the centre of the pitch (see diagram).
- Organise 2 teams of equal players + goalkeepers per team. If you have an odd number, make one player the 'Joker'. The Joker gets to play for the team in possession of the ball i.e., the Joker is always on the attacking team.
Game Rules/Constraints:
- The game always starts with one of the goalkeepers (see video). This is why the spare balls are to be placed next to each goal.
- The defending team (blue team in diagram) must retreat to their own half. Failure to do so results in 1 point being awarded to the attacking team. They have 7 secs to retreat to their own half. Make it shorter or longer depending on the age/fitness of your players.
- Once the goalkeeper in possession of the ball (yellow GK in diagram) plays their first pass, the defending team can decide to either stay in their own half (Delay) or go into their opponents half to win the ball back (Press). This rule/constraint enables the team in possession to build from the back and progress into their opponents half.
- Points: 1 Point for a normal goal. 1 Point awarded to the attacking team if the defending team fails to retreat to their own half within the specified timeframe.
Work to Rest Ratio:
- 10 mins work / 2 mins rest/drink break. Reiterate coaching points during the drink break.
Coaching Details:
- Same coaching points as before.
- Make sure to coach on-the-run, not stopping the flow of the game. Reiterate key coaching points during each drink break.
Progressions:
- Give the attacking team a certain number of passes to complete before they can progress into their opponents half. The number of passes will depend of the skill level / ability of your players. For more skilled players increase the number of passes.
- If attacking teams are finding it difficult to progress into their opponents half i.e., build from the back, have defending team locked into their own half. They can only win the ball back once the attacking team has entered into their half.

Target Possession (unopposed) (10 mins)
Overview:
- Set up a 20 x 20 playing area. Adjust the size depending on your number of players.
- As per the diagram/video have two equal sized teams e.g. 2 teams of 4. One team plays horizontally, the other team plays vertically.
- Have 2 players from each team standing outside the playing area. These players act as Target Players.
- Have the remaining players from each team standing inside the playing area.
- Both teams are to have a ball each.
- Play 3 min rounds. Rotate the Target Players.
