Front foot passing session

Skill. 2v1 to 2 gates. Start with groups unopposed to see how they MIGHT use a front foot pass in an opposed game situation. After a few minutes, get a couple of players from each group to com over and be defenders who come into space on pass across. Sequence starts with player on left cone with the ball. They pass to player on right cone then make an overlapping/crossover run to other side of receiving player. Receiving player takes 1st touch towards opposite gate to open up angle/space. 1 point for dribbling through a gate under control, 5 points for use of a front foot pass that leads to a goal.
This scenario now presents many moments to use a front foot pass. I describe it as a way to draw the defender towards the ball carrier (in conjunction with a pigeon-toed dribble), then release it quickly
into space for support attacker to run onto. They don't have to use it, but it will present many moments & some success.
Instruction points :
- 1st attacker must try to commit defender to create space to play support attacker into
- 1st touch towards opposite gate
- as soon as defender commits, release ball into space for support player
- be deceptive. Look away from where pass is going to go

SSG. 2 wide gates & 1 small goal. 1 point for small goal, 2 points for dribbling under control through wide gates, 5 points for a player who gets played in and scores after a front foot pass.

Technical passing diamond (15 mins)
Technical - front foot passing diamond. 3 or 4 players at each diamond. Dribble to at cone left, play front foot pass to player on opposite side of diamond, follow pass and wait at opposite cone for next turn. Switch direction to work both feet. After some practice, race.
Instruction points :
- ball out in front of feet
- pigeon-toed dribble
- point pinky toe towards ground to expose as much of top of foot to ball
- "stab" at the middle of the ball, should stay on the ground
- deception (look other direction just before passing ball)
- passing foot should again point briefly at target on follow through
