Unopposed Wide Triangle Patterns
Description:
- Finishing practice with an emphasis on creating a triangle out wide, and the combinations that can be played through this wide triangle
- Two central midfielders (#8 & #10), two full backs (#2 & #3), two wingers (#7 & #11), one striker (#9), one server (A) set up
- 'A' passes the ball into # 9. Ball is then worked wide through a combination the coach sets out beforehand. The ball is then played into an advanced crossing area and delivered into the box
- Players are limited to two touches at max
Progression:
- Crossing player allowed only 1 touch. Thereafter, the finishing player also allowed 1 touch
- Place a time limit on the combinations to encourage urgency
Coaching Points:
1. Wide Triangle Formation:
- There should be good space between the players involved and security behind the ball in case the attack breaks down
- When the deepest player make a forward run, another player should drop deeper to provide security
2. Crossing Variety:
- Attempt different types of crossing depending on the situation (chip to the back post, fast cross along the edge of 6 yard box, whipped cross into space, cutback)

8v6 Attack vs Defence
Description:
- Target goals are placed 5m in from the touchline at the opposite end to the main goal, for counter attacks when the defending team win the ball. Mannequins are placed on the corners of the 18-yard box
- A team of 8 attackers against a defending team of 6 (two centre backs and four midfielders +1 GK in a 1-2-4 formation)
- Attacking team starts the practice with a pass from the central midfielder (#8)
- The defending team's 4 midfielders are free to move anywhere to defend the box, whilst the two centre backs must stay between the mannequins
- Attacking team must attempt to move the ball wide to try and cross. Both the winger and full back on that side must touch the ball before before they are able to cross and score
- If the defending team win the ball, they attempt to score into the opposite mini goals
Progression:
- Allow one defending team midfielder to drop into the box to defend against a cross
Coaching Points:
1. Runs in Behind: Third Man Runs
- Encourage players to make runs in behind the defenders to meet the ball to catch the opponents unaware and also remain onside
2. Cross Detail:
- Crosses should be played with speed to evade defenders and accuracy to allow the finishing player to use one touch if possible
3. Finishing:
- Attempt to place shots into the corner of the goal, prioritizing accuracy over power
- Body shape (body over the ball)
4. Creativity:
- Be creative in movements

- 35m wide and 40m long pitch
- Neutral players must remain in the half they are allocated
- Any goal scored with a first time finish is worth 2 points
Progression:
- Volleys and headers are worth 3 points
Coaching Points:
- Once the ball has been played wide, players will have to decide whether to attempt to play a penetrative pass or recycle possession
