Possession - Individual (20 mins)

Possession - Individual

Set Up:

  • 4 small goals
  • Overload of players with the ball
  • Attackers trying to win the ball

Timings:

  • 15-20 Minutes

Organisation:

  • Play begins with overload of players in possession
  • Players in possession look to keep the ball and avoid attackers winning the ball
  • Players in BPO look to win the ball and score in the small goals
  • If a player scores in the small goal they then look to win the ball off another defender
  • The defender retrieves the ball and starts again

Coaching Points:

  • Technical
  • 1v1 - Move away from pressure - Protect the ball with body or by creating distance
  • Running the ball - Away from pressure into space - To create space away from pressure
  • Tactical
  • Work on creating distance with quick change of pace
  • Protect the ball keep your body between the ball and the defender

Possession - 5v5 Man-to-Man (20 mins)

Setup:

  • Set up a 25x25 yard field.
  • Divide the players into two teams of five and assign jersey colors to each team.
  • Have players on partner up with a player on the other team. Their partners are the only ones they can defend, and the only players that can defend them.
  • One team starts with the ball.
  • Gather extra soccer balls to a sideline next to the coach.
  • Assign one player on each team to be the captain and count the total number of passes for their team.
  • Play at least three, four-minute rounds. Add more rounds and time as needed. Make coaching points between rounds. Rotate partners after each round so players are matched up with a different opponent

Instructions:


1. Teams attempt to keep possession of the ball and complete as many passes as possible.
2. The captain of each team is responsible for keeping track, but the entire team is encouraged to count.
3. Players can only defend their partner and can only be defended by their partner.
4. Team with the most passes at the end of each round is the winner.
5. Play at least three, four-minute rounds. Add more time and rounds as needed.
6. Rotate partners after each round so that players can play against a new opponent.

Coaching Points:

  • Adjust the field size as needed. Add more space if teams are struggling to complete passes.
  • Teach the players to constantly move and change their supporting angles. This activity forces players to move and lose their mark to get open for their teammates.
  • Encourage the players look up and have an idea before they receive a pass.
  • Challenge the teams to win the ball back as quickly as they can.

Variations:


Touch limit – Give players a three, two, or one-touch restriction depending on the skill level.
Different point system – Instead of total passes. Have teams connect five consecutive passes for one point. Team with the most points at the end of each round wins the round.

Allow goal to be scored after a number of passes

Time limit of possession instead of passes

  • 5v5 - 7v7 Game
  • Half way marked
  • 4v4 in attacking area - 1v1 in opposite area

Timings:

  • 15 min

Organisation:

  • Keeper playing out
  • All attacking players must be pressing high and looking to win the ball as quick as possible
  • Players pressing win the ball and score

Coaching Points:

  • Technical
  • First Touch - Touch forward where possible - To create space away from defender
  • Striking the ball - Looking to pass through, around or over attacking players to release pressure
  • 1v1 - Dominate opposing player - Keep the ball
  • Running the ball - If space opens up
  • Tactical
  • Are Attacking players pressing and not let players have time and space on the ball.
  • 1st attacker press - second look to limit options
  • Striker always look to be an option beyond the press

    • x2 Areas
    • 2 small goals
    • 2v1 in the central area
    • Extra players on the end

    Timings:

    • 20 min

    Organisation:

    • Play begins with the end player playing in to the attacking player
    • Players in possession look to be at the defender 2v1 and create a shot
    • If defender wins the ball they become the attacker and score in opposition goal
    • Game breaks down start from the opposite end of the players who lost the ball
    • Player Rotation – Player who started in 2v1 go on the end of their area – Defender in 1stgame receives the ball from his team and starts 2v1 in attack
    • Rotate teams in 2nd area

    Coaching Points:

    • Technical
    • First Touch - To beat a player - To play forward
    • Striking the ball - Finish on goal - to create a pass
    • Run the ball - When space in front
    • 1v1 - To beat a player - To create a 2v1 - To limit the 2v1
    • Tactical
    • Players in BP
    • Take on players 1v1
    • Be creative in attacking area to finish in goal
    • Attack at speed where possible
    • Can use the overload to beat the defender
    • Create an attacking combination
    • Players in BPO
    • Defenders work on limiting space
    • Defenders win the ball with good tackling technique
    • If you can’t win the ball can we limit the passing options to create combination
