Warmup Game

Organization:

See figure. 8 players per grid. Multiple balls near players in line.

Instructions:

Players pass as shown. Two in the back act as center backs, two in centre act as midfielders. Rotate central players after playing 1 minute.

Coaching Points:

- Quality and weight of passes with instep of foot

- Open hips to take first touch forward

- Receive with back foot across body

- Movement to get to centre of the grid off ball (centre for more options)

- Counter movements after passes

Progressions/Regressions:

P) Have both grids race against each other for how many passes completed in a minute

P) Players can now choose whether or not to play the top player or bottom player, both midfield players must touch ball

P) Players who start the pattern can now join the pattern to create combinations

P) Players now rotate middle players (end passes, to middle, back to line)

Conditioned Game (40 mins)

Organization:

See figure. One field 40x40, field split in half. Each half is 4v2. Pugg goals set back from the area 10 yards.

Instructions:

Players play 4v2 and need to make 4 passes successfully in order to advance to next box. Two players can then join and play 4v4, with the other players able to be involved while still having possession (back supporting play, 4 and 5). Teams can score 1 point with 7 passes, or score in the pugg goal for 3 points. First team to 8 points wins.

Coaching Points:

- How can I position myself so that my teammate who is defending can play me a pass right away? (open lane, find the splits/gaps)

- If I can't score, how can we position ourselves so we can keep the ball the best? (Body shape, can you see the field)

- If I can't go through the defenders after winning the ball (splits), can I go around or over or dribble?

- How can I pass so that it is easy for my teammate to take a first touch?

- How do I need to position myself in order to take a good first touch out of my feet?

Progressions/Regressions:

P) Defender can now join the attack and make it 4v1.

P) Players now play 4v4, but can only have 2 players on one side at a time. (transition and communciation, also forces players to stay wider). Player who makes pass/dribble to next grid can join to create 3v2.
