FAW UEFA B – Switching Play Session:

This session is designed to develop players’ ability to recognize and execute effective switches of play using a 3-4-2-1 system against a 4-4-3 system. It includes:

  • A 10-minute specific practice (15 players) focused on structured play from back to front.
  • A 15-minute small-sided game (16 players) to apply switching play in a game-realistic environment.

Session 1: Specific Practice (10 Minutes) – Switching Play in a 3-4-2-1 System

Objective: Improve players’ ability to switch play efficiently to exploit space and break defensive structures.

Setup:

  • Players: 15 (Coached Team: 3-4-2-1 vs. Opposition: 4-4-3)
  • Area: Half-pitch (goalkeeper included)
  • Equipment: Balls, bibs, cones, mini-goals, mannequins (if available)
  • Structure:
    • 3-4-2-1 team in possession, aiming to switch play across defensive and midfield lines.
    • 4-4-3 team defends compactly, looking to block central penetration and force wide play.
    • Ball starts with the back three, who must progress through the midfield and execute a switch before attacking wide areas.

FAW UEFA B Coaching Points:

  • Recognizing When to Switch: Identify moments when the opposition overloads one side.
  • Body Positioning & Scanning: Players should be open to receive and execute a quick switch.
  • Speed & Accuracy of Passes: Switches must be played at the right pace to break defensive lines.
  • Creating Width & Stretching Play: Wing-backs stay high and wide to offer an outlet.

Progressions:

  • Limit central passes to encourage quicker switches.
  • Introduce a pressing trigger where opposition can press after 5 passes, forcing quicker decisions.
  • Reward successful switches that lead to goal-scoring chances with an extra point.

Session 2: Small-Sided Game (15 Minutes) – Switching Play Under Pressure

Objective: Apply switching play in a competitive 8v8 game to exploit space and break opposition structure.

Setup:

  • Players: 16 (8v8 including goalkeepers)
  • Area: 60x50 yards
  • Equipment: Balls, bibs, cones, full-size goals
  • Structure:
    • Teams play in 3-4-2-1 vs. 4-4-3 formations to replicate a real-game scenario.
    • Attacking team must switch play at least once before scoring.
    • Defending team looks to stay compact and force play centrally.

SSG Rules & Conditions:

  • Attacking team starts play from the back, looking to progress through midfield via switches.
  • Minimum one switch per attack required before a goal can be scored.
  • Defensive team must stay compact, limiting space in central areas.
  • Coach intervenes to reinforce wide play, scanning, and quick transitions.

FAW UEFA B Coaching Points:

  • Encouraging Quick Play: Use one or two touches before executing the switch.
  • Full-Back & Midfielder Awareness: Ensure width and depth in positioning.
  • Recognizing Overloads: Identify where the numerical advantage is to switch effectively.
  • Breaking Defensive Lines: Ensure the switch is purposeful and leads to penetration.

Progressions:

  • Add a neutral player in midfield to facilitate switching play.
  • Introduce time constraints for switching play (e.g., must switch within 10 seconds).
  • Award bonus points for goals scored directly after a successful switch.
