1. Arrival Drills

On Arrival - As players arrive they get straight into the following depending on the number of players at that time.

No more than 6 players in each box!!!

When the 7th Arrives split the 1st group and build two groups.

When the 13th arrives start the 3 red.

Ensure the intensity and focus of the players is high and continually provide coaching points.

  • 1 Player    -  Kick ups or dribbling with turns
  • 2 Players     - Kick ups or dribbling with turns
  • 3 Players     -    Passing in a Triangle
  • 4 Players          -    Rondo - 3 v 1
  • 5 Players          -    Rondo - 4 v 1
  • 6 Players     -    Rondo - 4 v 2

Rondo Rules - When a players causes possession to be lost (Defender gets the ball or the ball goes out of play) the player replaces a defender in the middle.

Coaching Points:

In Possession (Attackers)

  • Good movement off the ball to provide the player with the ball passing options.
  • Good movement off the ball to draw the defender to create more space for the team mate with the ball.
  • Quick pass when a team mate is free as moving the ball quickly tires the defence quickly.
  • Good Quality Passes - 1st line (closest team mate), 2nd line (Miss the closest team mate) and 3rd line (Play to though defenders to a team mate at the other side of the grid) passes.

Defenders

  • Positional Intelligence - Optimum position to cut out the pass and pressure the player with the ball
  • Team work (when defending with a partners) - Optimum positions to cut to hem in the player with the ball and cut out passing options
  • Decision Making - When to stand a player up and when to try and nick the ball
  • Defending Stance - Low centre of gravity. Watch the ball rather than the player.

Attacking and Defending

Training Objective - How to defend as a unit

Teaching Points for Defenders

  • Stay narrow and defend as a unit
  • Slide across the pitch as a unit
  • Good Communication
  • Think about triggers to determine when to engage i.e. Poor Pass, Poor Touch by attackers
Session Rules
  • Coach plays ball to a Defender (Blues)
  • Defender dribbles the ball to the blue line and then passes back to the coach.
  • Defender (who just passed the ball to coach) runs around the cone as quickly as possible to get back to help defend
  • Coach plays the ball to the attackers
  • Attackers move forwards against the three defenders to try and score

Coaching Points

  • Deny space in behind
  • Isolate the attacker (Try and get in between the passing lines)
  • Decision Making - When to stand an attacker up and when to commit to get the ball
  • Communication between the two defenders and the recovering defender
  • Defensive positioning to deny the pass and the shot
