  • Understand importance of getting head and hands to the ball
  • Understand importance of attacking ball at a positive angle (keep head and chest in front of body/legs)

Game - GK Rondo (Low Extension) (15 mins)

Objective - Work footwork/handling/shot-stopping in a fun, competitive environment

  • One GK protects a cone goal in the middle of a grid
  • Remaining GKs circulate the ball and try and score through the cone goal
  • 1) Ball is thrown - goal must be below shoulder height
  • 2) Ball is passed/shot - goal must be below waist height
  • Goalkeeper may attempt to smother/intercept passes through the grid
Coaching Points

  • Let them play, but reinforce session coaching points
  • Especially focus on footwork - always staying square to the ball
  • ALWAYS be set before shot is attempted

Objective - Reinforce basic footwork/handling

  • 1) GK takes thrown service
  • 2) Lateral footwork around (in front of) cone
  • 3) Over hurdle and another thrown service
  • 4) Lat. footwork in other direction
  • 5) Hurdle and thrown service again
  • Work W, basket, and scooped handling from last week

Coaching Points
  • Chest/shoulders always square to server
  • Quick steps, upper body as still as possible
  • Reinforce good handling technique/choices from last week

Activity 2 (Constant) - Foundations for Low Extension (20 mins)

Objective - Reinforrce basic extension save techniques and build ground familiarity/confidence

  • 1) From seated position
  • 2) From hips
  • 3) From knees
  • 4) Standing (you probably won't/shouldn't get here, that's fine)
Coaching Points

  • Head and hands to the ball 
  • Bring ball to the ground first (mid height extension)
  • Both hands to ball, ground as third hand, top hand secures while bottom hand extends thru (low dives)
  • Land on side, not stomach or back. Keeping top hand on ball should prevent landing on back, avoiding rotating hips/chest should prevent landing on stomach

Game - Handball (15 mins)

Objective - Practice shot-stopping in a fun, competitive environment

  • Two teams, preferably equal numbers
  • GKs look to score in opposing team goal by throwing the ball
  • GKs may throw ball to each other, but cannot run with the ball
  • Vary size/number/location of goals to suit session focus 
  • example of above - two goals either side of keeper if working extension
 Coaching points
  • Stay square to the ball, always prepared to stop shot/support teammate
  • Good set position - mobile, light, calm, ready to spring into action
  • Good fundamental handling habits on all actions
  • Good positioning and patience to give best chance of making save
