Skill (20 mins)

Organisation:

Cones to mark out a 2 sectors from the larger pitch - 20m x 30m. 6 players with the same bib colour (and different between) in each sector. Ball passed in by the coach into 1 sector, the players in this sector (passers) have to retain the ball by passing amongst themselves. One player from the opposing group (defenders) is then introduced to try to get the ball by intercepting passes/tackling player. Rondo scenario. Allow passing player to have 3 touches to stop dribbling. Coach should count the amount of passes and set that as a challenge. Once the move have broken down (mis-control, ball out of sector, player tackled), the coach should throw a ball into the opposing sector and a player from the side that was in the passing team now has to go into the opposing sector to retrieve tha ball.

Key points:

Pass and move and change the ball direction under pressure.

Progression:

Coach should increase the amount of opposing players as the players tire and get used to the drill.

Take down to 2 touches.

Regression:

Allow a number of unopposed passes before defender introduced.

SSD (15 mins)

Organisation:

30 x 40 metre pitch marked out with cones and goals at either end. 12 players split into 3 groups, 4 blue, 4 red and 4 yellow. One ball in play.

Rules of the SSG:

4 vs 4 Possession game where each team (red and yellow in diagram) has to keep the ball in the square and the opposing team has to try to get the ball back and gain possession for their team. The neutral team (blue) remains outside the square and either competing team is allowed to pass to the neutral player with the expectation that their team will get the ball back. After a period of time, change the teams roles around so that a competing team becomes neutral.

Aim:

Look to create a 8 vs 4 scenario and for the players to be comfortable in possession of the ball and allow the ball to do the work.

Progressions / Challenges:

Apply a maximum number of touches

Count max number of passes per team

Regression:

Change the ratio of players with and without the ball 5v3 or 6vs2
