WHO - Who defends early & who defends late (1st defender)?
WHAT - What is defending early and defending late and what does it mean for the 1st defender?
WHY - Why defend early or defend late as the 1st defender?
WHERE - Where do you defend early and where do you defend late as a 1st defender?
WHEN - When do you defend early or defend late as a 1st defender?
HOW - How do you defend early or defend late as a 1st defender?
Defending Early = Reading the game and anticipiating a pass into the attacker to pressure the attacker as soon as the ball arrives.
Defending Late = Understanding that you can not defend early and you must now make a delaying run to stop the attacker.
* If you go in for the ball, you must come out with the ball

SSG - Applying Defending Early & Defendling late (1st Defender)
Defending Early = Reading the game and anticipiating a pass into the attacker to pressure the attacker as soon as the ball arrives.
Defending Late = Understanding that you can not defend early and you must now make a delaying run to stop the attacker.
*If you go in for the ball, you must come out with the ball
**Move as the ball moves.
3 x 4 minute reps (1 minute talk inbetween reps) - The red team attack the 2 goals which are positioned out wide. The blue team, when they win the ball must make a certain number of passes to score a point. The red team makes a point for every time they put the ball in the goal.
Rep 1 @ 4 minutes (3v3) - The coach serves the ball in from one of the many positioned areas. The blue team will start deep and the red team will start high. This will allow the blue team to read and anticipate the pass and to see where it is going. They will also have to judge the speed of the ball and see where it travels. Rotate groups
Rep 2 @ 4 minutes (3v3) - Expanding the field space a little bit more. The blue team still start deep and the red team still start high. By adding more depth into the setting, the players will have to work out if they defend early or defend late.
Rep 3 @ 4 minutes (3v3) - Expanding the field space a little bit more. The blue team still start deep and the red team still start high. By adding more depth into the setting, the players will have to work out if they defend early or defend late.

ESSG - Applying the defending early & defending late model within FIFA Rules
Defending Early = Reading the game and anticipiating a pass into the attacker to pressure the attacker as soon as the ball arrives.
Defending Late = Understanding that you can not defend early and you must now make a delaying run to stop the attacker.
*If you go in for the ball, you must come out with the ball
**Move as the ball moves.
The Blue team scores point by making a certain number of passes. This will be decided based upon how they are doing from their previous rounds. The red team scores by getting the ball in the back of the net. Offsides will be played and if the ball is kicked out it will be a throw in or a corner. The only way that the game restarts is when a goal is scored by the red team or the blue team make the required number of passes.
3 sets of 6 minutes (1 minute talk inbetween)
Rep 1 @ 6 minutes - The red players will now feed the ball in to start the game. The blue team must be in their defensive formation and must read and anticipate where the ball is going and do there best to act as a 1st defender would (Delaying with a recovery run or pressuring instantly).
Rep 2 @ 6 minutes - Emphasise the points made previously.
Rep 3 @ 6 minutes - Same as above.

1st rep @ 60 Seconds - Players get passing and moving with the ball, focus on their technical ability to pass and receive the ball.
2nd rep @ 60 seconds - Players get into groups of 3/4. The focus of the defender is to read the game and arrive as the ball arrives into the player (defend early) or arrive as the player has taken the ball away (defend late). The defender's job is to get infront of the ball and get into a sound technical defensive position.
3rd rep @ 60 seconds - Change the player who is the defender and now can they perform the same thing. The focus here as a coach is to identify if the player understands when to defend early and when to defend late.
4th rep & 5th rep @ 60 seconds each. Same as above.
7th rep - The player can now win the ball, they are only allowed to go in for the ball on one occasions, if they go in for it, they must come out with it. The defender needs to explain to the coach if they won the ball early or late. If they win the ball within the 60 seconds, the defender must give it back to the attackers and try to win it again.
