U11s PoP Exploring Overloads Organisation (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Pitch divided into 2 zones zones (grids) across each side marked out using different coloured cones red yellow and white.
  • 30 x 25m pitch divided into two halves. 2 yellow cones arranged parallel to the goal / half way line 5 metres apart in the centre of each half.
  • 7x blue bibs and 7x orange bibs, ready in each square zone,  based on pre-arranged groups, on arrival (based on ability).
  • Balls arranged at each white cone.

U11s Arrival 3rd man runs (15 mins)

Organisation

  • As per session layout plan with the pitch divided into 2 zones zones (grids) across each side marked out using different coloured cones red yellow and white.
  • Make groups of 3 players on arrival. 1x ball per group
  • Explain what an over / underlap is and off the ball movement.
  • 3rd man run - player 1 pass to player 2.
  • Player 1 makes a run off the ball after releasing the ball i.e. overlap or underlap after playing the ball.
  • At the same time player 2 passes the ball to player 3. At the same time Player 1 is running off player 3 i.e. off the ball movement.
  • Player 3 releases the ball in the line of player 1s run.
  • Take turns starting with the ball and making the 3rd player run.

U11 Passing Circuits with Overlaps (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • 2 x Circuits 1 and 2: Based on ability / complexity. Divide players based on personal development needs  / challenge.
  • Focus on off ball movement, timing of run and weight of pass.

Q:  What runs can we do in a game and why do they the give the attacking team advantage.  Can we create an overload or underlap (demo) i.e. an additional player to outnumber the opposing team in that area of the field by off ball movement and losing our marking  / opposing player?

  • Passing and receiving, on toes quick movement. Quality of pass, firm with purpose. Dragons Standard. Take pride.
  • When performing overlaps, accelerate explosively to take full advantage of the space
  • Inner players move off the cone at the right time. Look for cues before pass is released.  Communicate shout for the ball to be played.
  • Receive open  - view  / scan see movement off the ball.
  •  Tempo - pass the ball at speed so the play flows not too rushed and not too slow - Why?

CIRCUIT 1 Flames

  • Player A passes the ball in to B line of run and continues run off the ball forward.  Player B passes first time to C (receive back foot) central player who plays the ball back to D (set pass)
  • Player D receives backfoot and passes in line of Player A run (timing of run critical and weight of pass).
  • Player A takes ball in step and plays into the waiting player.

+ Progression 1:  Add switch player A to Player B.

+ Progression 2: Player A and Player B both make an underlap to the opposite side instead of straight run.  Arc and angle of run key!

+ Progression 3: Player B makes an underlapping run to the left and receives ball from Player D. Player A makes an underlapping run to right and receives ball from Player B.

CIRCUIT 2 Fire

  • Player A plays ball into Player D.  On the release of the pass B makes a forward run.
  • Player D receives the ball and passes ball in line of  Player B,  timing Player Bs run. Player B takes a positive first touch right foot.
  • Player B passes the ball into the waiting player, Repeat from the end the ball has played into,

+ Progression 1:  Add wall pass after Player B passed it to waiting player.

+ Progression 2: Player A makes an overlapping run after passing ball to D.

+ Progression 3:  Player C overlaps B.  B plays ball into C. B moves onto C cone.

Challenge: How many complete circuits can be performed without mis-passing the ball / timing run and releasing the pass at the wrong time.

U11 2v1, 2v2, 3v2 Creating Overlaps (15 mins)

Organisation

  • As per session layout plan with the pitch divided into 2 zones zones (grids) across each side marked out using different coloured cones red yellow and white.
  • Red cone moved in 2 m in on the halfway line
  • 2 x Teams arranged as plan.
  •  For 2 v1, defender starts inside the yellow cone gate.  2 v2 defenders starting position outside the gate. Players arranged on the half way line.
  • Goal keepers in place each goal
  • Mini goals in each corner.
  • 2 x Scenarios:  2v1 and 2v2.  Phase 1 will be 2v1 both halves progressing to Phase 2 2v2.

Key Factors

  • 2 x Scenarios 2v1 and 2v2 Phase 1 is 2v1 / Phase 2 is 2v2 . Create overlap and use the opportunity to score.
  • Focus on off ball movement, timing of run and weight of pass as previous drill. Practice movement and release of ball under pressure in a 2v1  / 2v2 scenario.
  • Can your off ball movement enable you to lose your marker to create an overload and goal scoring opportunity / score?  Remember explosive movement before release - watch cues and timing.
  • In 1v1 situations drive at speed, head up aware of players runs.  Timing of release, engage the player and choose the right moment to release the ball to create the overlap /  overload.

PHASE 1 2V1

  • Player White A  drives with  the ball (angle) to engage the defender. Defender presses player.  Player White B continues off the ball movement  down the right wing as soon as ball is in play to create overlap option. Player White B passes first time to White A . Take a positive first touch and score in the mini goal.
  • Reset and repeat twice more (total of 3 attempts).  Players rotate with attackers and defender moves onto 2v2 grid.

+ Progression 1: Once White A releases the ball, continues forward run (arcs the run)around orange defender as option or to receive from P B

+ Progression 2: Player B makes an underlap to the opposite side instead of straight run. Arc and angle of run key!

+ Progression 3: Use full size goals only.

Phase 2 2v2

  • Player A drives at an angle towards White defender to encourage press and tackle. As soon as ball is in play Orange B makes a run towards {layer A to support / provide an Option in the 1v1. White defender D presses Orange B.
  • Player Orange A plays ball into Orange B to create a 1-2 (give and go situation). On the release of the pass Orange A continues to make a forward run past White C and receive a first time ball from Orange B. Player A shoots in the mini goal.
  • Repeat twice more (total of 3 times) and rotate Players A, B, C and D so both sets play each position.

+ Progression 1: Player  Orange A makes an underlap of Player B instead of going outside down the wing. B release to A on the underlap.

+ Progression 2: Player Orange B bends a run to support Player A to receive cross

+ Progression 3:  Use full size goals only.

Coaching Points
  • Head up player on ball be aware of off ball movement
  • Explosive movement at the right time.  Timing of run and release critical in creating overlap and exploiting it.
  • Timing and weight of pass.  Draw the defender in and release at the best moment to the overlapping player.
  • Look to combine to score.
  • Communication - players running off the ball communiate  - make yourself seen, when do you want the ball to be played.

U11 SSG - Width and Depth Over/Under Laps (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • As per layout but add extra cone to make the zone
  • Two teams with two wide players for width option.
  • Conditioned game - defending team is not allowed into the scoring zone (shaded area). Aim overlap / underlap through into the zone for attacking players to run onto to score
  • Striker only allowed in attacking half not in defensive half
  • Game starts each time with goal keeper who can bring the ball out into the zone. Ball must be played back to keeper to restart when it is won back.
  • Two attacking players are allowed to enter scoring zone.
  • Scores 1 complete link with overlap = 1 goal.
  • Movement off the ball - angle to receive pass - find space in between
  • Outside players can pass to each other
  • Think - through - over - around using underlaps / overlaps.
  • Carry drive release at correct time
