Scanning to Find the Space (35 mins)

Scanning to Find the Space

(Use this game without sticks and play a rollerball/netball version as a warm-up and to introduce the game concept.

Set up four zones, one in each corner of your playing area (size delendent on number of players). 4 v 4 is optimal for maximising touches and for creating the right conditions for the game to work.

Teams score points by having the ball under control in one of the boxes (carried in or passed in). One a point has been scored in a particular zone, then that one is locked and thenext point must be scored in one of the other three goals. Only the goal that has just been scored in is locked and becomes unlocked when the next point is scored.

Coaching Points

Skills - Carrying, passing. receiving, pull backs, v-drags etc., individual defence skills.

Principles - Recognising the space, helping the ball forward (off ball support etc). Stopping the opposition go forward ball.

Coast to Coast (Turn & Burn) (35 mins)

Coast to Coast (Turn & Burn)

Organisation

Set up a smal pitch appropriate for the players being coached (size, ability etc.) Three teams of two players. 2v2 in the zone, one player from the third team at each end of the zone to act as feeder/receiver.

Feeder plays the ball into the Reds who try to move the ball forward quickly to get the ball to the player at the other end of the zone.

If they do so the ball is fed back into the same team (Reds) who now attack the other end.

If the reds regain the ball then they counter attack and try to get the ball back to the original feeder, they then receive the ball back and attack the other end.

Coaches should structure their feedback etc. around the following PRINCIPLES:-

In attack - How can we best got forward quickly to score a goal?

In defence - How can we best stop them going forward, slow them down, and regain the ball?

When direction changes, the defenders should scan behind them and adopt a side on position to allow them to gather information and thus make good informed decisions.

Q - Do I pressure the ball or defend a passing lane through to a high forward/the receiver at the other end?

Q - Where is my player to mark?

Similarly, the ball carrier should scan ahead to decide how best to go forward quickly

Q - Can I pass forward to an advanced player/the receiver?

Q - Is there space for me to carry forward quickly? Where is the space?

Q - Where do I need to lead (post up, pull wide, stretch, guard) to help our go forward?

Technical:-

Passing (on the move), receiving (in flow, and in the direction we want to play)

Individual defence (jab, shave, block, steal)

Carrying to move forward quickly through space (f/h, b/h, one handed etc.) or to eliminate with dodges/drags/pulls/spins etc.)

Play for say 2 minutes and then swap the players around to ensure good work/rest ratio's.

Jump Back (40 mins)

Jump Back

Organisation

Half pitch game. Two teams, subdivided up into two uneven groups (e.g. a 3 and a 2). On group from each team waits on deck. Have a load of spare balls at the side of each goal.

Reds attack, Blues defend. If the Blues regain posession, they outlet the ball asap to the waiting group who attack the other end. The ball must enter the shaded area before the attack may start (players can move as soon as the turnover is effected. The Reds should jump back into their own half to defend.

Progression

1, On turnover the side that lost the ball can allow one of their players to defend outside their half (i.e. make the outlet ball difficult and ask questions of the outletting side (How can we get the ball into the zone to initiate a counter attack.

2, Swap sides so the outlet is to the opposite side.

RULES

Players may (initially) only defend in their own half!

The ball must go forward via the shaded zone before the counter attack!

If a goal is scored, the team that conceded outlet a new ball to their waiting players and the game goes on.

Coaching

Coaches should structure their feedback etc. around the following PRINCIPLES:-

In attack - How can we best got forward quickly to score a goal?

In defence - How can we best stop them going forward, slow them down, and regain the ball?

When the ball is turned over to the opposition, the defenders should get back through the middle of the pitch asap and protect the middle of the pitch. they need to slow the attack down as quickly as possible and to make the pitch tight for the opposition.

Similarly, the receiver in the shaded zone should scan ahead to decide how best to go forward quickly

Q - Can I pass forward to an advanced player/the receiver?

Q - Is there space for me to carry forward quickly? Where is the space?

Q - Where do I need to lead (post up, pull wide, stretch, guard) to help our go forward?

Q - Can I also anticipate the turnover from my team and prepare to jump back myself?

Technical:-

Passing (on the move), receiving (in flow, and in the direction we want to play)

Individual defence (jab, shave, block, steal). Disrupt, Deny, Dictate, Dospossess.

Carrying to move forward quickly through space (f/h, b/h, one handed etc.) or to eliminate with dodges/drags/pulls/spins etc.)

Change it Up

Organisation

Narrow the pitch down by 5m each side, play half pitch. Two teams 5v5 or 6v6.

Play regular game, HOWEVER....

Coach throws ball in and at any stage can change to direction of play. Coach also has spare balls so they can throw the ball to alter which team is in posession after each ball goes dead.

Coach should try to do this so they can create interesting situations for the players that requires them to make good decisions around the following Principles

In attack - How can we best got forward quickly to score a goal?

In defence - How can we best stop them going forward, slow them down, and regain the ball?

When direction changes, the defenders should scan behind them and adopt a side on position to allow them to gather information and thus make good informed decisions.

Q - Do I pressure the ball or defend a passing lane through to a high forward?

Q - Where is my player to mark?

Similarly, the ball carrier should scan ahead to decide how best to go forward quickly
