Defensive Build Up and Possession (15 mins)

Topics: Defending, passing receiving

Instructions:

Two teams of 8 to 10 players

30x30 yard playing area

Red Team in middle of grid is the attacking team. Red team tries to maintain possession within the grid for 5 minutes.

Blue team outside of grid is the defending team. Blue team members are assigned a number by the coach. The team surrounds the grid in twos.

Play begins when the coach passes a ball into the grid. The coach will then call out a number and the blue team member assigned the number will enter the grid area to try and disrupt the attacking team. A number will be announced about every 15 seconds. The next blue player will enter the grid to support the defensive team.

If the blue team wins possession, they can either pass within the grid or pass to blue players outside the grid to maintain possession.

Red team will immediately try to win the ball back.

The team that has the most touches on the ball wins the round.

After 5 minutes is up, the teams swap positions and the scenario begins again.

Coaching Points:

Possession team must play quick in tight area with good touches.

Anticipate the next pass, be creative and deceptive, use a variety of touches and feints, look for best options.

Defenders must apply pressure to the ball and support the pressure.

Constant communication between two and shifting positions relative to the ball.

If the defense plays flat, a through ball can beat them. Pressure cover is emphasized, it is one player up and player one off.
