Overloads Practice (20 mins)

Practice:

1. Player 1 rolls ball out of feet away from cone and passes the ball into player number 2.

2. Player number 2 takes a touch to then play pass back into player 1.

3. As player 2 looks up, player 1 drops to the opposite side of the cone to receive a pass from player 2

4. Player 1 plays a first time pass to player 3.

5. Player 3 drops off mannequin and takes a touch into forward space.

6. As this happens, player 2 joins the attack and player 4 becomes the defender creating a 2v1.

7. Exactly the same sequence the other way including players 5 and 6.

Attackers always swap lines with other attackers.

Defenders always swap lines with defenders.

4 minutes then change.

Rules: 6 seconds to score.

Play offsides to enhance realism.

Progression: Player 1 can be a recovery defender to create a 2v2 encouraging fast attacking play.

Add a competition. 1 for every attacking goal. 2 for every time defender wins it back and dribbles over the line.

Technical detail:

Ball speed to play first time passes.

Body shape, are you open to receive.

Support runs in 2v1, overlap/underlap/in+out run.

Encourage CREATIVITY and confidence to take on defender.

Find spare player.

2 GOALS = if attacker beats defender with skill and scores.

= If attackers combine in the 2v1/2v2 e.g. using overlap/underlap/runs off the ball.

Rules:

Play starts with goalkeeper who rolls the ball out to defender in 4v3 against attackers in defensive zone.

They aim to play out through full back who breaks into attacking half by dribbling through shaded zone to create 4v3 in the attacking half.

One of the opposition back four havedropped out of the SSG here to ensure the attacking team get theoverload.

Both teams will get the opportunity to explore different waysto create this overload carrying on the in possession principles.

If attacking team wins the ball in the the front three (3v4), they can score within 6 seconds.

Play the other way around.

Challenge, conditions, and targets:

Defensive team must make at least 3 passes before they break out into attacking third.

Can players try to play on two touches? Can the FB try to break into zone with their first touch?

Offsides to maintain realism.

1 goal for normal goal.

2 goals = using overlap/underlap then scoring.
