Details (10 mins)

Opposition formation

- 1-4-3-3 in and out of possession

Main moment

- BP

Key principle

- Switching the point of attack with speed and controlled possession

What?

- Often, we try to force play down one side where it is tight and congested where if we look to switch the point of attack quickly through our midfield where we generally outnumber opponents, we can catch the opposition on the other side where they will have less numbers.

Who?

- 2/5, 6, 8, 10

When?

- When we are in ball possession and we can't find a way to go forward with controlled possession down one side, we need to immediately look to find the spare man in our midfield who can turn and play to the other side.

Where?

- In our middle third when the ball is wide, we need to look to switch it through out midfield who are quite central and out to the other side.

Why?

- We often look to force the killer pass or the final ball when it is too congested and give away possession cheaply where if we look to switch with speed, the opposition will be lacking numbers.

Session objective

- In todays session, I aim to improve my teams ability to pick the right times to switch the point of attack in the middle third so we can look to penetrate teams and not cough up possession as much trying to force play down one side

Passing Practice/Warm Up (15 mins)

Players involved

- All players - 1 x group of 5, 1 x group of 6

Size

- 30x20 meter area

- Smaller squares within big area are 10x8 meters

Timing

- 15 minutes with dynamics incorporated

Scoring method

- The group with more switches at the end of every 3 minute block = 1 point

Starts/restarts

- Balls will always start with the attackers

Rules/explanation

- Both groups pick an area to start in

- 5v3 and 5v2 rondos in your area to start

- If you make 5 passes without defenders touching, 1 player can run to a free area where you can switch to him and the rest have to move over including defenders

- The person who is making the run into a different area has to be on the move before you play the switch

- If the defenders win it, the person who gave it away goes in and defenders who's been in the longest is out

Progressions

- You can look to switch at any time

- The person who is making the run into a different area still has to be on the move before you play the switch

Dynamic stretches and/or injury prevention

- Every 3 minutes - dynamics for 30 seconds - 1 minute

Rules/explanation

- Either 2/5 will start by playing into a teammate in the area, only one side at a time, to create a 4v3

- Reds will look to get the ball into their 6 who can't enter the area, then switch to the area on the opposite side before scoring

- Only one 9, one 8, 10 and ball side full back can enter the areas for red

Team task

- Can we look to switch the point of attack with speed whilst the the opposition are recovering

Player tasks

- 6:- When the ball is in the wide area, can you ensure you are always an option?

-  Can the 6 scan before receiving and if possible take touch opposite way and switch point?

- 2/5: - Can the opposite side full back be on the move, making a forward run when the 6 receives the ball?

- 2/5: When the ball gets switched, can the the fullback that isn't going forward ensure he is tucked in inline with the 3/4?

- 10/8: - If you can't turn or go forward, can your first look be into the 6 with a pass that allows him to turn?

Coaching cues

- 6: - When the ball is played wide, ensure you are always an option by moving into passing lanes and away from defenders.

- Before receiving, ensure you are aware whats around you by scanning and if you have time to turn, take your first touch away from where the ball has come from.

- 2/5: - As the 6 receives the ball and is looking to switch the point, ensure you are making a forward run and in a position to receive and go forward.

- When the ball gets switched, ensure the fullback that isn't going forward is tucked in inline with the 3/4.

- 10/8: - When you have no options to go forward or turn, look to play into the 6 with a pass that allows him to turn.
